I'll take your word for the vendor, but that is a terrible web site from a usability point of view and because of that I'm afraid he won't bet getting any of my business.

You may be doing yourself a disservice by not considering Bryant. I just used the Web site - I found the Homosapiens fountain pen in 2 clicks. I selected the request price button, put in my email address and had a instant response via email with the price and how to order it (good price). Bryant sells via his Website and also on the FPN. He offers great items, great prices (and sometimes phenomenal prices).

For my part, I always wonder why prices are not posted on a website - especially if you have to provide your email for the price. I'm worried about someone using that to start filling my inbox with their ads and worse yet everybody's ads. Reading your reputation on here leads me to believe that is not the case, but without that recommendation I would be extremely wary of clicking on the request a price button. Not meaning to be mean just giving my honest opinion if I had come cold to your site to order.

+1 on the price/email comment.

It seems to me your web designer has made some decisions giving pretty priority over practical. For example, if I click on Pens at the top of the page, unless my browser window is maximized I cannot see the full menu. Even with my browser window maximized (1366x768 pixel monitor) I can only guess that Visconti is the last item because the vertical sub-menu is cut off immediately below Visconti. What if you sold Zebra?

"Terrible" may have been a little harsh, and I apologize for that, since you've obviously put a great deal of effort into that site, but some of that effort is misguided. If I can't easily navigate a site, I go to one I can. I've only been a "fountain pen nut" for a week or two, but I've been visiting web sites since before most folks here knew the World Wide Web existed, and yours is the first pen/ink/paper-related site that I've visited (three dozen others?) that evoked the response I posted.

If in this file: http://www.pentime.com/assets/css/globals.css

You change the following line in the definition of: #nav li ul li

to:

#nav li ul li {

border:medium none;

display:list-item;

font-size:15px;

margin:1px 0;

width:118px;

}

(removing 2px of margin per item)

I think that would make it easier for most people.

There's still more spacing than is useful (my opinion), but that would make it easier on people who'd rather spend the money on pens than larger monitors.

You obviously have not been on the Montblanc site much.... Now THAT is pretty over practical right there... Full flash site with intros on EVERY page... Wait until you have a good half hour to browse that one...

Most Distributors do not allow prices to be listed on websites. Thats the main reason... I do have use mailers for advertising and sales, but the only to get on that mailer is to sign up as a member.

Cheers!

I agree that "terrible" is harsh... If you click on pens, all the pens show up on the side and you can just scroll... Visconti is the last one, and I dont sell Zebra rolleyes.gif So no worries there... bunny01.gif

I have found his website to be very simple to navigate. I have made multiple price requests, and they have been instantaneous. When I have had questions, his response times have been very reasonable.

Bryant carries very high quality writing instruments and I feel that his website is very much in line with the quality of those instruments. My only difficulty is that I would like to purchase everything that I view at pentime.com.

I'm sorry to read that you had some trouble visiting Bryant's website. As you can see, Bryant has quite a loyal following here on FPN, and outside of FPN as well. Most of them don't seem to have any problems navigating his site. Have you tried using another web browser?

In terms of leaving an email for the seller to get back to you with prices, that is common practice in the pen world, as many pen companies do not allow their distributors to advertise their prices online. I have not had an issue with unsolicited junk mail from any legitimate pen distributors that I have contacted for pen prices. In fact, I view this 'inconvenience' from a different viewpoint - I'm actually glad that I have to contact the seller, as this means that they are authorised dealers/distributors of the particular pen that I'm interested in. On the other hand, sellers who advertise prices may not be legitimate distributors.

By the way, just a word of caution (both as a regular member and also as a moderator), many people in the pen business are active members here on FPN. So, it does pay to be polite with your posts, as you never know who might be reading them. You are lucky that your negative comment was concerning Bryant, who is a pretty easy-going chap. You may receive some less cordial responses in the future, if you're not careful.

Cheers,

FP

On my part, I meant no offense to Bryant or his business. I am new to the FP world and have a question. Why is it a common practice to not post prices and email them instead? (Sorry to hijack)

Several of the high-end manufactures (e.g. Montblanc) don't allow their prices to be directly posted on a website. I can't say I understand (or necessarily agree with) why they do it that way, but whatever. It's not something Bryant decided on his own. On the flip side, any site you see with listed prices (at least as far as MB goes) isn't an authorized seller, or won't be for much longer if the manufacture finds out.

      Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

      It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

      Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

      Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

      @asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
