Is This New: Cross Edge?

Recommended Posts

Here's the blurb, fyi: "Unique click and slide mechanism." Retailer shows it as a gel pen, which I guess refers to being Selectip because, a. the blurb also mentions using a Cross ballpoint refill, and b. Cross Selectip/rollerball refills are gel ink.

Are these extremely new? This retailer has them at the top of his new releases page, but I haven't found anything on either the Cross (us) or Cross (eu) pages.

Much appreciated.

[Note/edit: found one other place this line is mentioned, and that note shows pre-orders available with the pens not shipping until next week.]

Hi Scribero

Your are indeed correct. the Edge collection is brand new and is filtering around the world as we speak. The patented Click and Slide mechanism stops the cases of loosing the cap. They take the jumbo selectip refills and can therefore be a ballpoint or rollerball. We are also launching Red and purple Gel rollerball refills to acompany the launch.

You can now find them on the European Cross Site and We would love to hear what you have to say. I am using one right now and looks at home alongside a Monaco Blue C-Series.

The mechanism reminds me of the Cross Ion. My Ion had the rubber grip which got all funky and started peeling off. Then the actual metal on ion came off.

The Edge looks neat...I just hope it doesn't turn out like the Ions. The C series may be more my style. More Gel refills would be great. I would love to see

a waterproof or water resistant gel.

Much appreciated. Can't wait to try one out; I want to know how tight and solid the click-&-slide works, and whether it seems like it'd wear out sooner rather than later. It looks terrific, and having a red Cross ink element will be great for my daily work. Edge looks nicely substantial without being overly heavy to the hand since it's resin. Another winner for my Cross toybox.

Excellent, thanks. Could I trouble you for a description of how the mechanism works? The cross.eu Web site makes it sound interesting and appealing, but I haven't quite gotten my head around how you actually work it. That'd be neat.

Thanks again.

Well quite simply you pull the two coloured sections in oposite directions and the nib comes out of the front. Then write what you wish and to store the nib simply slide the 2 coloured sections towards each other. To reload a new refill unscrew the metal cap where the nib comes out of, replace the refill as desired, screw in the metalic cap and your back up and running.

As to how the insides work, I have to say simply by magic :)

That would be a beauty in black and gold! If you could get a fountain pen with that same mechanism (Black and gold)I'd line up to buy one!

I like the mechanism idea.

But I am not fond of the finishes.

In a resin version I would certainly consider this.

I just bought a Cross Edge today - I ended up getting the green one and I love it. The pen is a green resin with a slight metallic finish and has a chrome nib, center, clip, and top. The clip is spring loaded and rather large, feels really sturdy, and has the Cross logo die-cut into it. Surprisingly the chrome doesn't really pick up finger prints, which I was afraid it might. There is a small rubber ring around the chrome nib that makes gripping the pen for writing feel natural and your hand feels secure. The sliding mechanism is smooth and "clicks" into place easily.

The gel-ink writes smoothly and I like that I can also use a regular ballpoint if I decide to in the future.

The pen looks hi-tech, and design-wise it reminds me of an iPod shuffle or nano, with the bright metallic colors and chrome. The black and silver Edges also looked sharp but I wanted something with some color since all of my other pens are neutral colors.

This is my second Cross pen, my other one is a Tech-3.

Thanks so much for the review.. Can you comment on how solid(non-cheap) it feels? Any problems with the refill drying/not starting?

BTW: I'll be replying to an older thread about Cross Select tip Gel refills. I just picked up a Blue refill to test. It writes exactly

like my Parker blue gel in terms of color(nice dark blue) and feel(smooth)...with a slightly longer dry time. BUT, running both writings under water, the Parker Gel almost all washes away while the Cross Gel remains dark and legible. This makes the Edge (or C-Series) a serious replacement for my ballpoints.

I haven't had any problems with the refill, but I have only had the pen 1 day. It writes very smoothly and the ink dries fast. I'm a left and was afraid that I would smudge the ink with my palm while writing, like I do with a lot of gel-ink pens, but this one dries fast enough so this isn't a problem.

The pen itself doesn't feel cheap at all. It has a good weight to it and feels really solid. I don't think you could even tell that part of the body is made of resin, except for it doesn't have that cold feeling when you first pick it up like some metal pens have. It feels and looks nice. The click-mechanism feels smooth, and the clip is huge and feels really springy and secure. Nothing rattles or feels bendy, it feels like it will last a long time.

How sturdy does the click mechanism feel? There are exactly zero pen stores anywhere in my city, so I have about that much chance of actually moseying into a store and eyeballing one in person. I wonder about the mechanism for its sturdiness; does it feel nice and smooth, or does it have a hefty, mechanical clunk like a rifle bolt?

Thanks.

The click mechanism feels pretty sturdy. It slides open smoothly and slides closed smoothly, but does have a rifle bolt sound of the tip retracting back into the barrel. I unscrewed the tip and took out the ink cartridge and shook the pen and you can hear something in the top of the body sliding inside - it seems like a weighted piece that pushes against the ink cartridge when you slide the pen open, and then there is a small spring inside of the tip that when you close the pen, at a certain point once the sliding weighted pice is lifted, springs the cartridge back inside of the body. It all looks and feels very sturdy and well made though.

The only thing I don't really like is that I can't slide it open with one hand in one motion, unless I place my thumb under the bottom of the clip while holding it - and push upwards. But the clip comes to a bit of a point at the end and kind of hurts my thumb when I push against it. Otherwise I can grip the top of the body with my forefinger and thumb and slide it open - but it takes two motions to slide it all of the way - the pen is fairly long when opened, if it were about an 1/8" shorter I would be able to open it in one motion. But I guess my hands aren't the largest for a guy, so it may just be that it is designed for people with larger hands, or normal sized hands I guess. It's not that big of a deal though, I still love the pen and while I'm thinking I click it open and closed, with two hands, a hundred times - just because it's fun to do.

So, is the gel ink water proof/resistant? I read somewhere that cross gel ink is pretty good...any tips on this would be welcome..archival?

Also, I cannot find dimensions in metrics. Cross still using archaic measuring system? Fine, but at least give us in brackets metrics...

I would not say it is archival. I was comparing it to Parker gel ink which washed away with the slightest water. The cross gel was more

resistant to water where it was still legible. But it still washed away unlike regular ballpoint ink.

Just google an online imperial/metric converter and use it to convert the "archaic" measurements to the metric system... there are at least 50 of them.

I know that but kind of getting tired of converting ..no big deal but it is easier to picture in my head metrics..

btw, Cross has fiber ink replacements...wonder if those are any good for sketching (they fit in this pen)...

Waitasec. I have a (Cross-branded) red Selectip rollerball cartridge that was in a garage-sale Classic Century when I bought it. Were these discontinued at some point and re-continued just now?

FalconUser, do you mean the porous-point Selectip refills? In my experience, they're great for sketching, and are more bulletproof than the gel refills. Water caused a slight tint shift, but left behind purple writing with a really cool yellow flame looking aura. Until I got my first Noodler's and a bottle of Pen & Ink Sketch waterproof ink, I used those Cross refills to address letters. I'll see if I can find a scan I made of the effect, as it's rather cool looking.
