What Pens Did/do Famous Writers Use?

I found the full quote from E M Forster's letter to J R Ackerley (31 May 1947); "Have repaired to the Observation Car for ink, and it will not function in my Presentation Parker 51 pen, and my Parker 51 ink is checked in my grip for Chicago."

@rodia77 -- A few years ago, someone on FPN (I don't remember who, offhand) took his kid to some SF con and I think that Neil Gaiman autographed some book for the kid but with the father's FP!

Thanks for the anecdote!

Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson collects and writes with fountain pens.  Back in 2008 he gave a lecture in Jacksonville in conjunction with his latest book and had a book signing afterwards.  As I stood in line I noticed that he was using a bright red Visconti.  When my turn came I asked him which Visconti he had and suddenly I had his full attention.  He looked at me, his eyes darted down to my shirt pocket that contained several pens, and he pointed at my shirt and asked, "Is that an Art Nouveau?"  It was and he asked to look at it.  For several minutes (maybe longer) we talked pens.  His signature pen was a red marble Kaleido Voyager (celluloid version).  He also showed me his Knight's Templar (I did NOT ask to handle that one.)  I think he was using Waterman's ink in the Voyager.  Some of the people behind me became more than a little impatient.

I bought my first Visconti because of that meeting, a red marble acrylic Kaleido Voyager.  Florida school teachers earn a lot less money than world-famous astrophysicists.  It is still a very nice pen.

Here is a link to a youtube video where Dr. Tyson talks at length about his pens including the Visconti Knight's Templar:

And here is his signature written with the Voyager.

Former French president François Mitterand used exclusively a Le Man 100 Patrician in Green.

Pens are like watches , once you start a collection, you can hardly go back. And pens like all fine luxury items do improve with time

@kestrel I keep hoping that some day when I'm in NYC and making my (almost annual at this point) pilgrimage to Fountain Pen Hospital that I'll get to meet Neil deGrasse Tyson, because he always comes across as a really cool and really smart guy (the fact that he's an  FP user is just an added bonus...).

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
