Junior Size Padfolio?

KCat

Recommended Posts

I'm not necessarily looking for leather. Years ago I had a Mead organizer that was a zip up and was approx. this size. I wish I'd never gotten rid of it. Maybe I could have cut out the binder bit somehow and used it.

Here is, essentially, what I'm looking for.

http://www.csnstores.com/Clava-Leather-CL2110x-CLV1402.html?cv=

And that may be what I'm stuck with. I wouldn't mind finding something cheaper in heavy nylon or the like because this is more an experiment in discipline than a sure thing. But, multiple searches come up with very little. The "Clava" being the best thus far and not too far from what I would like. Still, to spend $40 now and then later maybe, if I decide I like the method, to get something from Ren Art perhaps? Well, that seems silly if Ren Art can make something like what I want for not much more.

Anyone seen something like this that might be cheaper or better? I don't want any kind of binder in it but do want room for more than one pen and for loose papers plus the notepad. Ideally, I'd like something that fits a #16 Rhodia but that is where Ren Art or the like would come in. Later when I have more $$ to spend.

Ideas?

Check EBay for a Levenger Ambifolio in Junior. I snagged one for $40.

Ta muchly. While I did not find any ambifolios, I did find something that will work for me if I can win it. We'll see. If not, well, I'll probably go back to the Clava thing.

I'm surprised to see no junior ambifolios listed on the Levenger site at all. Either they're discontinuing the line (seems a bit rash) or they're really clearing out to replace with new colors. I thought it was a well-thought out design and always wanted one but couldn't find a good reason for actually getting one.

What I *really* want is a fully zipped journal cover with several pen loops. Anything after that is gravy. And if not zipped, at least with folds over all edges. I looked at gfellers which looks like they'd make just about anything but charge an arm and a leg (I'm sure it's for good reason) But, I need both my arms and legs.

:gaah: Stupid stupid girl who got rid of her Mead that is no longer made.

It doesn't seem like there's much call for what I want. I guess people who carry around journals put them in purses and briefcases or messenger bags.

Maybe, if I win the thing I'm going for and it works out for a few years, I'll be able to justify having something I want made to order. Ren Art has some nice stuff for essentially reasonable prices, but not of the design I want. And their envelopes - well, I don't want an envelope. I want something that is a single unit, not something I have to dig around in.

have you tried Franklin Covey? They have several sizes available. Usually there's some sort of a sale to offset the regular high prices.

Ya know, I looked but with no pictures of the interiors and very little information about the innards, I didn't know what I was getting into. For example, does the "Friday Zipper Binder" which looks reasonable and about the thing I'm looking for, have a fixed binder inside? If it's got a particular binder riveted into it then it's not what I want. I don't want loose leaf and don't like binders in general. So without being able to go look at it (which I can but since I only began this search Friday, haven't had the opportunity) I am not willing to pay for it. If someone were able to tell me the answer to that, it would make me go over to the mall on Monday. I mean, assuming it's the right answer. :)

right idea - a little too small. The A5 case is more like it. I'll keep it in mind though the exchange rate makes it considerably more expensive than I'd hoped to pay at this time.

Renaissance Art Leather has these, and I know Gfeller Casemakers will make one for you.

They (RA) don't have anything enclosed. The closest thing they have is an envelope. Well, shoot, I can put the stuff in a bag for that. But I want something that opens essentially like a notebook but can be closed up to prevent things from falling out. Namely, multiple pens. I need pens to write in a journal and digging in my *other* bag just seems pointless when there ought to be *something* out there that allows the pens to hang out with the journal. I'm surprised that thus far I've found nothing. All refillable journals have flaps or latches or ties, but open ends. And maybe one pen loop. I don't trust loops by themselves.

Gfeller is way out of my price range based on what I looked at. I can only imagine that requesting what I'm looking for would just put it further out of range.

I have written to RA about this, open to design suggestions from them as long as, as I said, pens and such remain safely within the cover. Have yet to hear from them. Probably not something they're interested in.

I found a discontinued Frankly Covey wire-bound agenda cover which should allow me to get a compact Rhodia or the like into it and does zip up. It was fairly inexpensive and should work for me for a while. Otherwise, they're wire-bound covers are also more than I'm willing to spend.

I *am* willing to spend more for a RA piece - to an extent. Their BOUS covers are reasonably priced. But I have a significant limit on this given that I'm not entirely certain I can fix the problem (long story) this way. So best to start off with something inexpensive to begin with. The FC cover was $30.

RA => http://www.renaissance-art.com/catg93/category.aspx (Rustic Leather Folio, 5x8).

nice. but again, does not meet my requirements.

"something that opens essentially like a notebook but can be closed up to prevent things from falling out. Namely, multiple pens

There are other features I would like but are not as critical. I would prefer it have some extra space so I can toss in my smallish agenda on top of the notepad or notebook. Again, not available in book-style folios.

The design of the folder holder is close. I bought one for my son-in-law. However, it is too big. And still only holds a single pen safely. I'm looking for something the size of the 8x5 (well, actually, 9x6 would be better, 10x7 ideal) but enclosed or at least with one secure pocket (not a slide in (which means "slide out" as well) pocket as in most padfolios.

I have a really nice leather binder from Franklin Covey, but the pain is that it's a 7 ring binder. Either you do a lot of hole punching, or (try to) find a source for good paper that's pre-drilled for 7 hole. The paper I found from Covey is about as friendly with FPs as Tiger and Elin. Office Depot has some 7 hole on the web site, but no clue how good/bad it might be.

If it held a 6" X 9" pad and zipped closed, how many pens would you like it to hold?

...and what time-frame would you need it in?

(We could go over color and cover design later)

The one I purchased on-line is a wire-bound cover. IOW, it allows me to slip a wire-bound notebook into it. It also, IIRC, has a slot for a notepad. Which should work just great. But yeah, the ones with the ring-binders have no appeal to me at all. I really hate loose-leaf. I think it reminds me too much of junior high school. :) I shoved everything into paper folders in High school just so I could escape loose-leaf binders. Devil spawn as far as I'm concerned. I realize they work great for many folks.

At this point, there's no rush. I will be getting the $30 planner cover soon and will test out just how well that design works for me (or if it doesn't - it does lack pen holders so the pens will clatter around in it. By no rush, I really mean it can be well down the line. Post Christmas, even.

I'd like it to hold at least three pens. 4 would be preferred. (allowing me to include a mechanical pencil). I typically carry two FPs (often my VPs) for writing, one Decimo for editing, and a mech. pencil for my small agenda. Not that this is important information. Just sayin'.

Of course, as I said, price is an issue. A $200 folio is not going to work. I'm really not even picky about it being leather. Canvas works. Certainly leather is more appealing if it can be done for a reasonable cost (and I don't mean the $30 I lucked into on the discontinued FC cover. I recognize that handmade work takes time and effort.) Not interested in embellishments. Just a good workhorse piece of equipment.

edited for typo. Equipement? Really, I can spell.

I'm crazy about these from Japan:

http://en.item.rakuten.com/nagasawa/4902805493994/

No zip though, but the notebooks that fit inside are beautiful.

I saw that thread the other day. Looks like a nice thing to have as a home journal. Right now I have too many of those but in the future...

I like how Japanese paper is so often made to accommodate FP & calligraphy ink. We've forgotten how to do that here in the US. :(

Cool...

Let me sketch out a couple things, and I'll see what I can come up with.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
