Paperchase Bonded Leather Notebooks

Chris

Recommended Posts

I was in a local branch of Paperchase looking for discounted Herbin ink (as reported elsewhere) when my eye fell on a new line of notebooks. They are slim, in two sizes and with bonded black leather covers and silver-edged pages. The price was about £7 and £9 for the small and large respectively.

They look very much like an 'Allanclone' and I wonded if anyone else has spotted them or has had a chance to try them. With small stack of other notebooks awaiting use, I resisted the tempation...

Was there any sign of the discounted ink...?

I haven't used the leather ones but some of their other stock can be pretty decent. Prone to bleed-through on some of the wetter inks...

Sadly, no ink. I heard some was available for 90p a bottle. At that price, any colour would be worth trying.

I have tried some of the Paperchase notebooks before and they were OK although very different from one another, but this stood out as obviously trying to be in a different class and much thinner so I suspect very thin paper rather than only ten pages. As it was cellophane wrapped, I could not inspect more closely.

Ah well, perhaps I'll wait and see if anyone else bites. I am sure Biffy will, sooner or later :)

edit - new keyboard and the keys are stiff!

I've used the journals... They're pretty good but bleedthrough with really wet inks, and have some feathering and alot of showthrough...

I was the one who reported the ink :) I'm a bit disappointed that you didn't find anymore

  • 2 weeks later...

I bought one last night and started it this morning. I wish I'd saved my money!

OK, they are less than half the price of some, but twice the price of others just as good.

The paper is poor, in my opinion; it is quite thick but soft in feel and there is feathering and bleedthrough on most of the ink and pen combinations I have tried. The cover is flexible but of course, being bonded leather, it is like comparing chipboard with solid timber when it comes to quality. It works fine for pencil and for gel ink roller balls, but not fountain pens.

I think I will remove the test page with a razor blade and give this to someone as a present - someone who does not yet know the joy of fountain pens. I wish I'd saved my £9.75 and put it towards an Allan!

I only used them once and found the paper NOT to be FP kind....

Sorry I didn't catch the thread in time. My experience exactly. I was sucker enough to have bought 2 awhile ago - and the paper was different in both. I assume they source globally from a variety of suppliers.

Funny thing - I did exactly what you described, slicing out the used page. One still sits in the drawer and another has been gifted to one of my kids.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
