Oh, I dunno. The texture and look of the pen with the hammered exterior and muddled red section kinda reminds me of The Doomsday Machine from the old Star Trek...

I hope the seller breaks even on this one. He had to have paid a fortune for it if he bought it directly from Kullock.

Don't care for the hammered metal part (at all,) but that woodgrain HR hood looks fantastic!

I actually clicked on the listing hoping the whole pen was the woodgrain. I would have gone for that.

OMG, I think it would look great with a nugget ring, big gold chains and, of course, a red-brown liesure suit. One must have the proper attire for such an elegant writing instrument. One could probably find them all on the -bay.

It looks like I have the contrarian view on this. I like it. I like it a lot. The woodgrain shell might just be a tad too much though. A standard black would be my choice.

It's a bit much, but it's interesting. I would like a HR barrel better.

I will confess to having a couple of Kullock's DJ barrels to dress up my Aerometrics from time to time (usually the same occasions that I feel compelled to wear cufflinks), but I've never gotten into his stuff to any great degree. Kullock can have some interesting designs, but his entire genre of "Fantasies" is a matter of taste that probably appeals most to those whose "gripe" about the "51" is that they are too streamlined and the colors too plain. Suffice to say that I don't expect to get into a bidding war over this one.

Agreed. I if the hood were the same as the barrel, i would bid on it.

i'm not a huge fan of gold caps and barrels in general, which is why i almost threw away a parker 75 i had once. instead, i gave it away to a friend for mcdonald's lunch. (Edit: the friend is an avid fp user, so it went to someone who appreciates it.)

The woodgrain HR is gorgeous. The thing about that hammered look is that a little goes a long way.

well-said :)

Is the hood a Kullock-made item? I've only ever seen Bexley-made aftermarket HR 51 hoods (as part of a hood+barrel rig.)

I have a gold 51 with a few dings in it. Maybe I should ding it up some more?

Based on some of the other stuff he does, I would guess it is. I would think cannibalizing a Bexley would be expensive- even for him!

Ditto. I'd love to see one entirely in that material.

I emailed jesy to see if she could make me a "51" out of the same material as the hood (i sent her a link to the ebay sale), and she said that Ariel did not make that pen, but made something similar to it a while ago.

i still love the material for the hood, though.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
