Cursive Handwriting Using An Italic Nib

An inexpensive way to determine whether you're interested in pursuing italic nibs further is to visit eBay and buy a Pilot 78G double broad (BB) pen. This is a 1.1 mm stub that will give you excellent line variation without a whole lot of effort, and for only about $25.

I've been spending time whining about my wrist hurting from my "death grip" and lost track of this great thread! I'm thinking ac12 is right about the nib width of 1.1 being the best size for everyday writing. And, I'm going to look for this Pilot 78G. I don't know if they're all so nice, but I have a Metropolitan with a medium nib and it's incredibly smooth for under $20. Someday, I'd love to get into more expensive fountain pens, but right now I'm new to them and still learning how to hold them comfortably!

I found another source for 78Gs, Peyton Street Pens. The B & BB ones are on sale for $22. No financial interest, but I did order one.

So, which one did you order? The B looks about the same as my Safari, and I think it's perfect for everyday writing. I'm tempted to try the BB based on the photo. Thanks for sharing.

I already had the BB, so I ordered the B. These 78Gs are nothing exciting to look at, but they certainly write well. I think you will like the BB.

There are some gorgeous pens out there, but for me, it's how they write. Thanks again!

The B nib on my Pilot 78G measures about 1.1mm.

I did not "measure" the Lamy 1.1 nib to see how close it comes to 1.1mm.

update: I measured the Lamy 1.1 nib at 0.044 inch = 1.12mm

So the Pilot B and the Lamy 1.1 nibs are essentially the same size.

I would guess the Pilot 78G BB nib is about 1.5mm.

I do not have a BB nib to measure.

I just got a Pilot Parallel with a 1.5 nib for Christmas. I know it's meant for calligraphy, but I'm looking forward to seeing if I can write with it!

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
