Montblanc 149 - 2010 -

I remember a few months ago, reading the thread deciding which to choose... MB 149 or MB 146 and the responses went along the lines of you'll eventually get both.

How very true.

So today, arrived mint from Germany and if I'm intepreting the box codes right manufactured April 2010:

A MB 149 designed for daily writing, with an extra-fine nib. Wet, luscious with a bit of feedback that reminds me of an Aurora that is my favourite writer. In precious, dark black glossy resin and a paler gold trim. The moment I got it, I took my Visconti Inkpot out of my bag and inked it with Iroshizuku Ku-Jaku to test on the spot (whilst still in store).

And then wrote with it the rest of the afternoon. Oh, I like this pen. It's slightly top heavy due to the brass piston but still well balanced and a lovely heft unposted.

Let's just say I like it.

And next to what is another beautiful pen, probably the only one I can think of that immediately rivals the MB 149 in majestic beauty and writing quality... the St Dupont Orpheo/Olympio XL in black chinese lacquer and gold trim. Also in an EF.

Yes, both the Dupont and MB 149 fits easy in the pen pouch :)

Thanks for your quick reply.

I have this penpouch too (for 2 writing instruments isn't it)?

Good to know this. I was wondering if it is possible.

Have a lot of fun with your new precious!

Congratulations! The 149 is an amazing pen. Unfortunately I don't use it often enough. My daily writers are two 146s which I carry out around in a very similar MB pen pouch. The only difference: mine is showing some wear.

oh dear, i think im going to be joining you so very soon here, I am heading overseas shortly and I certainly think a 149 is on the cards - (well I've saved enough for it ok?) hehe..

But -> decisions, decisions with this pending 149 - To BB or not to BB?

Edited to add: By the way, beautiful pictures.

I want a 149!! My next pen, but one question, I've never used a MB nib, is there a writing sample of the differences? I'm thinking about a 'B' nib...

Someone really needs to pin this most helpful thread by Darius of writing sample with different MB 146 nib sizes:

I don't think I have found a MB 149 comparison quite so compehensive. The MB 149 nib in my limited experience writes slightly wetter and broader than the MB 146 but there is probably enough individual variation in the hand ground nibs that your experience could vary significantly.

-->you'll eventually get both.

You'll eventually get many of both. That's my current problem - it's a sickness. I just ordered my fourth 146, and I'm in the hunt for more 149s. Please, someone, stop me before I'm broke...

Pens are like watches , once you start a collection, you can hardly go back. And pens like all fine luxury items do improve with time

Indeedy!

It may take a little while, but once you get one, the other seems to follow. Best combination since Nick & Nora. I would have said "Scotch & soda", but I prefer my Scotch neat.

Big big congrats to you, Tanalasta! My only question is which traveling ink pot do you have? I tried to use my 149 with mine (black bottom, black cap) and it didn't seem to fit. To be fair, that was only once and a little while ago. so my memory could be a bit fuzzy.

Congrats again on the 149 and use it well!

Thank you.

I use the Travel Inkpot pictured here (first picture I found on google images) which I bought locally in Australia: http://www.worldlux....eling%20Inkwell

I believe that's the most modern iteration of the Visconti Travel Inkpot and seemed to fit the MB 149 well enough that it didn't leak when filling.

I do have the older black plastic one also that I ordered from Bryant but that's currently flushed/cleaned so haven't tried to see if the MB 149 will fit into there.

The MB 149 is in my pocket and was used at work all morning :cloud9:

Softer as in the nib?

The modern MontBlanc nibs are not really known for their softness. The MB149 being larger than the MB146 is softer, yes but if I remember the last time I dipped a Pelikan M1000, the M1000 was softer again. I would probably describe the modern MB 149 extra-fine as fairly rigid with some spring but was nowhere as soft as my Visconti Palladium XF that just gushed ink and was a delight to use had ink not bled through most papers due to the flow.

The Edison 18k nib is quite stiff and I had it ground into a cursive italic by Brian when I bought it so it's not really the fairest of comparisons.
