This happened a couple of years ago, but my best deal ever was a new Pilot Vanishing Point with box and papers for $10.

That's better than me. I found one in an antiques shop about an hour and a half north of me about a year ago for $45 US. Looked as if the previous owner used up the cartridge and that was it. The converter included looked as if it had never been removed from the box before I got it.

Pen is too heavy for me, but I'm going to sit my husband down with it one of these days. If he doesn't like the F nib on it, I'll get myself a Decimo with an EF nib and swap nib assemblies between the pens. If the F nib in the VP is to his liking, I'll have to decide what size nib unit to get on a Decimo....

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

Mine was found in one of those liquidation stores where they sell overstock and returns from other stores. It was in the bottom of a box of office supplies. Someone had taken it apart, down to the clip and nib unit, but all the parts were in the box. Fiddled with it for a few minutes and got it back together. The store owner said since I did the hard work, I could have it for $10 if I wanted it. Of course I did!!

I got a "new old stock" Waterman School pen (i.e. plastic body) w/ a 27k gold nib from 1987 this year for $13 shipped from Switzerland. It may be plastic, but it's indestructible and writes like a dream.

I've been having good luck watching newly listed buy-it-now pens on ebay. I think I did pretty well on the following:

Pristine Black & Gold Duofold International from 1990 - $160 Shipped

Pristine Visconti Van Gogh Self Portrait - $118 Shipped

Retro 51 Double Eight Tortoise - $21 Shipped

1. A Pilot/Namiki VP, green with gold. Purchased NEW from a gift shop inside a hotel in Las Vegas, "going out of business" sale...$25.

2. A Parker Frontier Flighter, with 2 nibs (fine and crisp italic/stub), @ Office Depot...$3.

In both cases I specifically asked if they were marked correctly...!!

Pair of black Esties, free.

I just got three free ones yesterday -- black J, blue J and blue SJ -- from someone on a different site who just didn't want them anymore.

Also picked up what turned out to be an Eversharp Doric plunger fill with a superflexy nib, for a very low price.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
