What confuses me is how the ink leaves the nib (opening up space behind) which then gets filled from further behind.  Should I be thinking of this like the water cycle?

Didn't quite understand the question. There are 2 main channels in the feeder: capillary (for ink and they may be several) and air. Channels do not interfere with each other. According to the laws of physics, air cannot get into capillary, just as there is no need for ink to fill air channel. Nobody bothers anyone. The ink flows from the reservoir to the nib via capillary channels, and air enters the reservoir for compensate the pressure. Genius design. Or I didn't understand the question?

Once upon a time, when nibs were still flexible, the breathing hole does another function - it stopped the effort when flexing so that cracks do not appear, but now it performs only the respiratory function for air and this is clearly visible from the shape of the feed. Nibss that do not have a breathing hole perform air access to the channel in another way. This is physics, this is not fiction. And what is your opinion?

I agree it's basic physics that you need something to go back into the ink reservoir to replace the ink that came out (e.g. air).  But an air channel is commonly on the opposite side of the feed from the ink channel, and the air doesn't enter the air channel via the breather hole.  My understanding is that the breather hole today is there for strain relief (which you mentioned), aesthetics, or just to avoid arguing with potential customers that expect it to be there merely because it's what they are used to.  And, personally, if I'm trying to align the feed with the nib the breather hole is nice to allow me to see what I'm doing, otherwise it's quite hard to see the ink channel in the feed while viewing it through the nib slit.

TLDR:  The breather hole isn't there for air.

I skimmed.  Very interesting.  Then grabbed all my currently inked pens and peered at them; I found three that didn't seem to have a visible breather hole: an M and K Pelikan, a Diplomat Aero, and a JinHao shark fude.  Very different pens, all with good ink flow.

No, you understood.  I didn't understand that there were two channels.  This makes sense now.

Thanks, everyone for your explanations.   I don't like it when I don't understand things.

I don't know why you decided that. Do you really know the design? In the vast majority of modern and vintage feeds, the air channel is above the ink channel. 5bd81548188ce8e43ee196d8e1391105.jpg)

Where the nib does not have an breather hole and the air hole placed at the bottom, as a rule, the channels are aligned inside the feed(air chamber for example or any other way like Sailor use), so that they enter to the reservoire together. This is of course not a discussion for this thread, but I suggest you read in detail about the design of the feed. As for the correct placed nib on feed, this is more a matter of practice and the hole does not matter here, I never look into it and always know how to do it right :))

"In such moments, as not to go mad, to save brain and stay calm, beacuse it’s could be scary, I looked around at nature. A bumblebee is flying here near me. Listening the butterfly. Feeling wind on my face. And remind to myself what am I fighting now. Why I am – To stop this evil, to keep it from going further!" - Roman Trokhimets

There should be an exhibition once this madness is over. To honor those who gave their life for freedom and the artists who made it possible to commemorate them.

But the sky will always come to me.™

@Catpaws Thank you!

@Astronymus Yes, it is necessary, although it is simply impossible to honor everyone in the pictures. But I hope that there will be artists who can do it!

I love the way you capture the personality of the subjects you are memorializing.  It's interesting, you often draw in color, which gets me thinking about why so many others only draw in black.  I honestly don't know; the blues look fabulous, and don't distract from the subject.

What about color, first of all, black is the coolest of its viscous properties, ie it is the most opaque, the most light(fade)-resistant, the most contrasting, etc. Secondly, it is the historical color of charcoal and everything related to drawing, including the use fp in the engravings or first comics. In general, I do not really like the usual blue color like Royal, but because there is a lot of ink in the world, I use different colors, that it was not so sad to look at the pictures in a heap)). To order, I mostly paint with Platinum Carbon Black because it is the coolest ink of its properties))

Hey! I think that everyone who wanted to have already mentioned the victory of the band “Kalush orchestra” at the Eurovision 2022 contest, so I can modestly celebrate too :)).
But the first thing I want to say is that mother is probably the most precious and closest people in everyone’s life, who gives life, who teaches, who care, and who protects you all her life, and does not ask for anything in return. There are many songs in the world to moms and in each culture separately, but there will never be enough to thank them! So do not be ashamed and show them your love every moment while they are near (or far), they are worth it! And it is not surprising that this year the song of the band Kalush dedicated to mother won, because these are our values, these are the values of humanity in the first at all.

Kvitka (Kacey) Cisyk is a very significant person for modern Ukrainian culture. An American by birth and a Ukrainian by roots, she has spent her life striving to spread Ukrainian culture. She was supposed to win an Oscar and Grammy at the beginning of her professional career, but the human factor of the film's director took away this opportunity. But that didn't break Kasey, and instead she had a successful career and recorded two great albums of Ukrainian songs, involving 40 of New York's best instrumentalists.

Julia Paevskaya (Taira) returned to Ukraine after three months of captivity. She had lost up to 50 kilograms in captivity, and the conditions of detention there were similar to a concentration camp.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
