New Parker 45

Parker Quink Turquoise

Recommended Posts

Last week I purchased on line my first Parker 45 fountain pen.The pen arrived today and what a nice pen it is.The pen has a medium nib and black plastic barrel.Loaded it with Parker Quink Turquoise ink and started writing. The pen works great.

Liked it so much I ordered another Parker 45 with a steel barrel and fine nib. While I was at it I ordered an extra fine nib to go with the pen as well.

When the new pen gets here it will give me five Parkers. Two Sonnets, two Parker 45s and a Frontier. They are all great pens in my opinion and each has its own charm in use.

I have 3 45s and each one of them writes splendidly. They're all a bit flexy too, which is a treat.

I've got a couple 45's and I really love them. I even have a whole set pen, pencil and fountain pen. I like the fact Parker pens take the longer ink cartridges so I can use aurora blue ink. Another great pen is the Parker 75.

LOVE the 45's. I've two myself; a s/s one with an M nib and a tealish looking one with an F nib. :) Great writers, both of them.

Was just doing a little looking and reading around the net about the Parker 45 Fountain Pen.Have been reading that the last version of the Parker 45s from 2001 till the end of production are known as," Special 45s".The invoice for my 45 that arrived today lists the pen as,"Special Black Gold Trim".Also reading that these Special 45s have a dome or jewel on the top.Thought that was interesting.

Two Sonnets,two Parker 45s and a Frontier.

Congrats on your 45`s, as you can see i`m also a fan. There`s something i need to know: please tell me what do you think about the 45 gripping section compared to the sonnet and frontier. I like the 45 a lot, but i guess the grip is better on the frontier, for example, and i`m thinking of buying one. The modern sonnets i`ve seen and held feel cheap and...i don`t know how to put this...gypsy style, bling bling in a bad way. The frontier seems nice though.

Parker 51 Vacumatic 0.7 Masuyama stub; TWSBI 540 M; TWSBI 580 1.1; Mabie, Todd and Bard 3200 stub; Waterman 14 Eyedropper F; 2 x Hero 616; several flexible dip nibs

owned for a time: Parker 45 flighter Pendleton stub, Parker 51 aerometric F, Parker 51 Special 0.7 Binder stub, Sheaffer Valiant Snorkel M, Lamy Joy Calligraphy 1.5 mm, Pelikan M200 M, Parker Vacumatic US Azure Blue M, Parker Vacumatic Canada Burgundy F, Waterman 12 Eyedropper, Mabie Todd SF2 flexible F

My Parker Frontier is a smooth writing pen.So are all my Parkers. For myself each model has its own feel and I cannot say that I find any of the Parkers I own unpleasant to use.

Theres nothing really "special" about "special". Parker also use "special" on their black, blue and burgundy jotters - "special" :glare:. Its very much a Parker marketing tool from what I can see - and not a very clever one either.

About the only thing different or special I could see about the later Parker 45 Special is that they have a dome or jewel on the top and the clip looks like it could be a little different or special.

We have 5 45's in our family with steel and gold nibs and one is a desk pen. They all rock! Tough stuff and write great. One had a very wet nib (it would actually drip sometimes!) that I replace with a 14K nib off eBay, but that fixed the problem and now it flows and writes fabulously. The steel nibs are actualy the smoothest and least noticable, but they are also medium instead of fine (or XF) so the float across the page better.

Anyway, +1 for bulletproof, tough 45's!

Others on this forum see the domed jewel as a point against the modern 45, confusing its somewhat Bauhaus image. The clip seems to have plenty of admirers whilst others have said it should have not been redesigned. Personally I don't like the domed jewel and the clip I am neutral on. My domed jewel 45 stainless steel is XF and writes a XF line, in fact finer than a vintage XF Parker 45 that I own. This pen is great when fine detail is required but I can't recommend it as an overall general writer as it has too much tooth. My 7 vintage 45's particularly the 14K's with fine and medium nibs are excellent writers and I get a real kick when receiving these 45's from ebay with their lovely old style metal converters and even one Parker Eversharp orange converter. But my best 45 is the Harlequin 80 Shield pattern which is beautifully balanced in the hand and has a glorious Broad smooth as butter steel nib. Would love to here your views on the XF nib when it arrives and I'm sure you'll like the stainless steel 45. Love my 45's.

streeton, thank-you for your comments I enjoyed reading them very much. For myself I kind of like the dome.It makes it a little different from the other 45s.Maybe its just the rebel in me.LOL

I to am looking forward to giving the XF nib a go.I have two Parker Sonnets and one of them has an XF nib that I really like.It is super smooth and puts out a nice line that I like using with Parker Quink Blue/Black Ink.Liked that XF on my Sonnet so much I ordered another XF nib to replace the fine nib on my other Sonnet.

Hopefully the new XF nib I have comming for my Parker 45 will not have too much tooth as has been your finding with this nib.Just because the XF works great in my Sonnert does not mean that it will work well in my Parker 45.Time will tell.

That Harlequin 80 sounds like a beautiful looking and great working pen.

Looking forward to hearing more of your comments and I will post my results when the new pen and nib get here.

I have two parker 45 in my daily rotation.

my parker 45 write more wet then my parker 51. May be because

I can unscrew the nib feed section to clean it totally.

it writes as good as my lamy 2000.

  • 2 weeks later...

The extra fine nib and my Parker 45 with the fine nib arrived this week. The extra fine nib works well in the Parker 45 that I replaced the mediun nib with but not as good as the extra fine nib in my Parker Sonnet. The new Parker 45 works but you have to be sure to have it held just right so that it hits the nibs sweet spot.

This has also been my experience and quite a lot of other posters too - it is a very small sweetspot. You can only write with a 45 when you are properly set up square. What is the 'F' nib like compared to the 'XF' in terms of smoothness. My vintage 'F' nibs are excellent, with just the right amount of feedback.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
