Sheaffer No Nonsense Cartridge

Hi, I was wondering if an international short cartridge would fit in a sheaffer no nonsense fountain pen. I was thinking about buying one but the sheaffer proprietary cartridges are not that economical to use. If not, where do you guys get your sheaffer cartridges for an economical price?

Thanks, Riker

The Sheaffer cartridges hold somewhat more ink, and are designed to rest against the fins inside the bottom of the barrel to a) seat the cartridge on the nipple when the barrel is screwed on, and B) stay there if the pen is dropped. A short international cartridge will fit the nipple, at least on my No Nonsense pens, but is too short to reach those fins. If you treat your pens gently, it shouldn't be a problem.

I refill empty Sheaffer cartridges via a syringe, using any ink I choose; the newer cartridges with the seal balls are less prone to cracking than the older ones that are just pierced by the pen.

Alternatively, apply a little silicone grease to the barrel threads and you can use your No Nonsense as an eyedropper pen.

I have several No Nonsense Sheaffers and enjoy them tremendously. I have amassed a substantial collection of doznes of Sheaffer carts from two unlikely sources and enjoy blending the colors.

If you shop carefully, several online suppliers will offer a five pack of Sheaffer cartridges for under US$5.00. If you buy ten or more assorted fivers from a catalog the shipping can be free. That's fairly economical. Big chain craft stores in the USA sell Sheaffer calligraphy sets and usually have the five packs of cartridges but only in boring colors like black and blue. Be careful not to pay more than US$5.00. As noted elsewhere, you can easily refill empty Shaeffer carts with a syringe and any good bottled ink.

I ride a recumbent, I play go, I use Macintosh so of course I use a fountain pen.

International cartridges and Sheaffer (ball-sealed) cartridges use the same diameter sealing ball, so international cartridges should fit on the nipple as Chthulhu says. If you had to use the international cartridges you might put some foam in the barrel to help keep the cartridge on the nipple, but I also recommend refilling Sheaffer cartridges with a syringe.

My personal objection to converters is that they don't hold as much ink as the cartridges they replace. I find it no less convenient to refill a cartridge than to fill a pen with a converter in it, so I don't have to refill as often with cartridges.

I sometimes buy my Shaeffer refills from Farhneys <http://www.fahrneyspens.com/Item--i-96300S> They have about 10 different colors and come $5/5 cartidges. $4 if you buy 12 or more. Unfortunately you have to pay shipping. OTOH, Levengers has free shipping for ink. Can't remember what Pendemonioum shipping rate is for ink. I know of no source of Shaeffer ink in my area so I have to buy it all online.

I have many no nonsense pens and I have used international cartridges in them with success. I also use syringes with bottled ink, and the Sheaffer cartridges. The main reason I used the internationals was to get different ink colors for travel.

This entire thread has been confusing...

I have a slew (slough?) of Sheaffers, from a 70s period "school" cartridge pen, Imperials, Connaisseur (Levenger Seas series), Balance II, Intrigue, Crest, Legacy, Targa, older NoNonsense-based calligraphy set, and newer German-based calligraphy set... NONE will accept international cartridges -- they are all designed to take the flat-ended cartridges where the pen nipple actually punches a hole in the cartridge plastic (Okay, I'm dating myself -- newer Slovenian cartridges do have a ball sealing one end -- the OLD cartridges needed nipples with a cutting bevel and one could use either end of them). From a distance the German calligraphy versions look vaguely NoNonsense (flat top and bottom, staked clip with large ball end, cap a larger diameter than body) -- but the nib sections are longer, rubberized, and not compatible with the NoNonsense.

Sheaffer cartridges are 2" long, cylindrical, and flat at both ends (though as mentioned -- new ones have a ball seal at one end and a hollow at the other, might be possible to ship a pen with a reversed cartridge inside; old ones were solid plastic at both ends). International cartridges are only 1.5" long, tapered from base to tip, and have a bottle-nose type tip. Even if they fit the nipple, they are too short to have the pen push them into the nipple and if one manually pushes them on, could work loose spilling ink.
