Very well-behaved qand consistent. I consider both the blue and the blue-black to be very good colours. I've also tried the red-brown and found it good as well. The gray looks exactly like graphite pencil marks on the paper. Never a problem with rinsing it out or staining.

"how do I know what I think until I write it down?"

I found the black to be boring and somewhat washed out (though well-behaved.)

OTOH, I LOVE the red-brown. It is one of my top 5 inks. Interesting color, and good performance.

I agree about the red-brown; it's excellent. But if you're interested, better hurry. It's been discontinued, and when sellers are out, it's gone. I've also used their black. It's a dark, matte finish ink, pretty basic. Their inks generally flow very well and are relatively saturated (though not on the order of PR or Noodlers).

I have only used the brown so far and it has showed some flow issues. I tried it on the M90, Pilot Falcon, Pelikan M300 and others and it makes all those pens dry writers.

The color is beautiful tough: a kind of gold brown.

I have the black. I like it, but nothing special.

How does it compare to Aurora Black or Pelikan Brilliant Black?

I have Blue, Blue-Black, Red-Brown & Brown, Kiwaguro and I've used cartridges of the black.

I would say the black is exactly as jbn10161 described it "dark, matte finish ink", Aurora and Pelikan's Blacks are darker. Sailor's inks have near the same level of smoothness of Aurora's inks.

The blue-black is a great true blue-black, it isn't made of iron-gall but looks that way like Mont Blanc and Lamy. The blue is deep and dark and on certain papers has a red element that shows up, not as pronounced as in DC Electric Blue from Private Reserve. The red-brown is a great brick red color and it's a shame that Sailor is not continuing this color. The brown looks sort of yellow or golden as described earlier, a medium brown.

I find the Kiwaguro to be extremely smooth, it produces tight lines (your nibs will always write true to size with this ink) and has a shiny quality to it when dry. The ink bridges in refilled cartridges especially narrow ones (i.e. Lamy) and I have to shake it down. As far as carbon inks formulated for fountain pens go, I like Platinum's Carbon more, better flow but it doesn't retain the same line tightness of the Kiwaguro.

I have to agree. That non-carbon Sailor blue-black is my absolute favourite blue-black. It has the same darkness and bluish-blackishness that MB's and Lamy's bottled blue-blacks have, but it is much wetter and also easier to maintain. MB and Lamy blue-blacks are IMO much too dry and also need a lot of maintenance. Okay, it is a not an iron-gall ink but almost as permanent. Less permanent than MB or Lamy but almost the same (permanence) as Diamine's Registrar's ink. BTW Pilot's blue-black is similar (to Sailor's Jentle blue-black) in regard to wetness and maintenance but practically "only" a blue, not a real blue-black.

I'm all about the Sailor Blue-Black. It's nice, shades a little, but has a nice matte look when used in a wet writing pen. It's dark and navy-ish. It doesn't have the purple undertone that makes Mont Blanc BB unique, but it's just as formal looking. I've always got this one in rotation, in a WET flexible Parker Vac.

The Jentle brown is especially well suited to a wet writer. It has a transparent cast, some shading and it's a warm brown, unique and beautiful.

I agree that the Sailor BB is smoother writing (similar to Aurora) than the brown. It flows very well in all my pens. The brown won't flow well in all pens, it's better suited to wet writers, i.e. Visconti or Delta, or a wet flexible vintage Waterman, Eversharp, etc.

Still haven't tried the carbon black, but I'm not a black ink enthusiast- gimme Aurora black and I'm happy!

Enjoy!!

The red-brown is really beautiful, and it shades wonderfully in a pen that's broad or has some flex. But as another writer said, they've stupidly discontinued it - I scooped up the remaining three bottles at the local store that carried it.

Sailor BBk is a well-behaved ink that has been in my arsenal for years. Check out M4R1N4's review for more info.

Hi,

I thought the pale Blue, I think it was called 'Snow', was OK. I didn't think it was much different than the Herbin 'Azur', which is praise indeed.

EDIT - To add: Link to Ink Review. I'll only take credit/blame for my Post, OK?

I have a box of BlBk cartridges coming, so I have high hopes for that ink (especially after the fiasco with the nano BlBk). It might be a much needed replacement for the recently changed Parker Quink Blue Black.

P.S.

What Vendor is preferred for the Sailor Blue Black?

Hello,

is there somewhere an official statement from Sailor (or a distributor) that the "old" Jentle ink colors like red-brown have been discontinued? I would like to know for sure.

Hi,

  • I haven't seen anything.
  • I have the nasty feeling that unless one is on-the-spot when some of the inks are made available, they just might disappear from the [export] market / eB*y.
  • I believe the Jentle 'Snow' was released as an SE : when its gone it won't be back. (Not a huge tragedy, as mentioned, I believe that the Herbin 'Bleu Azur' is a close-enough substitute, and that colour is not even mentioned on FPN very much at all. [Then again, 80% of all FPs on Earth may be inked-up with it right now, and I wouldn't know.])
  • I like to think that the 'standard colours' will remain available over time, but the less-standard colours : not so much.

Bye,

S1

Can anyone compare Sailor Blue-Black to Noodler's Ellis Island Blue-Black?

I heard about Sailor discontinuing their red-brown ink both from John Mottishaw and from Flax, the store where I buy the ink.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
