President Obama's Personal Montblanc

Penman1964 clued me in to an interesting photograph. From the White House Flickr Stream, below is a link to a very high resolution photo taken by White House Photographer Pete Souza of President Obama when he was showing a guest that his suit was American made (Hart Schaffner Marx). The photo shows a Montblanc Meisterstuck in the President's left inner jacket pocket.

That one shot could keep him in pens and suits for life...

When you're good at it, it's really miserable.

Hey, great photo, thanks for sharing it around. I especially like the label inside the President's suit jacket that says "Made Especially For Barack Obama" ! Awesome. I see two pens, actually. MB and something else...

Here's another pen pic from the white house flickr page...what pen is this?

I can't find the picture now, but in that White House flickr stream there are a lot of pictures of those pens. They're Cross Townsend Rollerballs, with Barack Obama's signature on them.

That's a Cross Townsend Lacquer pen - fountain or roller ball.

The Montblanc pen looks like a Meisterstück Classique size to me.

And here is my royalty-free marketing suggestion of the day :

What are the folks at Montblanc waiting for to come up with a very expensive Barack Obama Nobel Prize special issue pen ?

MB 149 with three-colour M nib, pen stand, blotter

MB 149 with three-colour M nib, slit slightly off, leather cigar case

MB 146, clear blue ink window, 18K yellow F/M nib, crystal inkwell

MB 146, striated ink window, 18K yellow fine nib, MB 147, M nib, leather case,

Voltaire WE with Bernstein clip and 149 star, M nib

166 yellow, 166 green, 1x161, 2x167, a couple of 164/163's, Platinum solitaire signum BP

And a couple of Lamy, Pelikan, and Rotring calligraphic pens

I wonder if the other pen is the Lamy Studio Rollerball used for signing the guestbook at Dresden Castle, Germany, wwhen meeting Chancellor Merkel? Perhaps he liked, and kept, the pen? If you "click through" to Flickr, there are a number of photos of the President signing documents.

Agreed.

And based on President Obama's order for rollerball signing pens from Cross, the Meisterstuck Classique is also likely to be a rollerball.

So...

Is this one of those "see I have an expensive pen in my pocket" moments, or is it "see what a fancy pen case I carry my white star in" moments?

Probably the latter - I'm sure the price of the pen pales in comparison with the price of the suit.

Looking at more of the flickr photos,

P030210PS-0962

Is this a MB he's holding or more like a Cross?

As for public signing, looks like he's got a whole tray to choose from?

Also, it seems he's definitely a ballpen person...

Okay now that he's shown the world he appreciates quality, can he please trash those Cross pens and start signing documents with a Montblanc? Please!

But would that be politically correct? :hmm1:

Actually, what I would like to see is him encourage Cross to make better pens - for writing, not for showing off. What would be better than a Cross made all silver 149 thickness pen with a juicy fat nib... Yes we can??
