Help! Ink on the wall!

inky

Recommended Posts

:gaah: It took awhile to figure out what those 2 little spots were on the wall and when I decided that it was purple ink, I decided it did not matter because I was repainting in about a week. WRONG!!!!

Purple ink just keeps bleeding through by blue paint and it is not pretty. It also bleeds through the Kilz. Any ideas? Ummm, there are at least 7 coat/dabss of paint over the original spots now and it is still bleeding through.

Paint the wall chocolate brown?! ;)

I'm sorry to hear of your predicament, but I really don't know what I would do in your situation either.....

Is it drywall? If so I would take some sand paper to it for a light sanding, re mud it and try a primer and then the blue paint again. If this does not work cut the spots out of the dry wall, repair and remud and re paint.

Or there's wall paper.

Good Luck.

how big are the spots?

Drive a screw through the spots and then remove the screws and patch the holes. If it still shows after 7 coats of paint it needs drastic action.

Sad own experience on wall plaster an a very light vanilla-yellow color and a dark permanent ink: sand the paint and plaster. Dig in with spatula if necessary. De-dust, apply new plaster, let it dry, sand off evenly. A hand of white base helps, but is not essencial if the spot id not too big. A couple hands with a quality paint and you're all set.

I've had luck with lemon essential oil for getting some inks off/out of things around the house. Good luck, Hope

Thanks, for the suggestions. Think I will start with sanding, but driving a screw hole is not a bad idea either. :)

Try two coats of shellac, allowing the first to completely dry before applying the second. Spray a light coat of polyurethane varnish over the shellac and then paint after 48 hrs. This will seal almost anything. The key is to prevent the dye in the ink being dissolved again.

The problem is that water based paints (duh) dissolve the ink to bleed through the new paint.

Your best bet is probably pigmented shellac (Zinsser's B-I-N shellac-based primer is one well-known brand, but there are others). Don't get the water-based stuff that is "just as good," it is not; you need old fashioned pigmented shellac. Clean up is a pain - but being a fountain pen user you are used to that! Save yourself some trouble and get a disposable brush.

And, of course, once it is dry paint over the pigmented shellac with your paint of choice.

Good thing it wasn't Baystate Blue. You'd have to put up a new slab of drywall!

Shellac is brittle and will deteriorat over time when used in that application. It will bleed through a latex based kiltz, but should not bleed through and oil based kiltz.

Gentle sanding with a 100 grit, then oil base kiltz dry for 48 hours then anther quick hit with oil based kiltz then you should be good to go.

Or try an enamel primer.

Tip we were given by a decorator is to seal it with gloss paint, let it dry and then paint over it.

Spots are gone! A little sanding, little scraping with putty knife, fill with a spackle compound, couple coats of paint and some texturing and success! Blue walls without pinky-purple spots. :clap1:

Thanks for all the good ideas, if nothing else I also learned about how to handle a few other stains.

Did you try to remove it with household bleach? Even BSB can be easily removed with it.

Ammonia, alcohol, vinegar, and other ink-removing substances can help it too.

Please, try and let us know. You scientific experiment has to be published.
