Good pen stores in NYC

Hi,

I was wondering are there any good pen stores in NYC besides Joon, Fountain Pen Hospital and Art Brown? Particularly ones that carry Stipula?

Thanks,

I did a tour of NYC pen shops and visited six of the shops. You've named the top three. The other stores may have a pen counter and carry three for four brands but they're not in the same league. Fountain Pen Hospital and Art Brown Pens were, to me, the ultimate in pen stores.

What are the other 3. When I go, I must go just to see, and definitly, Art Brown is one of the best stores I was in, besides Webster's Pens, but that is in the UK

I no longer have my notes. I did reviews of FPH & Brown stores (those are posted in the Market Watch forum). There were two stores a few blocks north of Art Brown. One was primarily a stationary and paper products store that had a pen counter. The other was a small pen and watch shop, about 1/6 the size of Art Brown Pens. Then, there were two stores I stopped at mid-town. One a large, three story store full of Japanese imports with lots of disposable pens, ink brushes, paper and supplies but only a couple of brands of Japanese fountain pens. The last midtown shop was an upscale stationary store at about 26th Avenue, half-way between Art Brown and FPH.

I'm sorry if this sounds vague but if you do an Internet search I think you'll recognize the stores I'm describing. Again, I'd not invest the time in visiting them. I originally planned to write an article for FPN on "fountain pen stores of New York." After my visit, I just wrote reviews of Art Brown and Fountain Pen Hospital instead. There was also a Mont Blanc outlet that I didn't see as I was looking for stores that carried a wide selection.

I don't think they list Stipula on their website, but I know they carry them since I bought one there a while ago. Just let them know what you're interested in, they carry more pens than they list on their site, so you might get lucky. They also have some of the best prices around.

Hi Art Brown would be my pick, but Venture Stationers is a cool store on Madison Ave, and Kate's Paperie is also good and also carries Stipula. All 3 are excellent stores, and don't miss the tiny Joon store in the Trump Tower Lobbey near the 5th Ave entrance. Also, Lees Art Shop at 220 W 57th St has a great selection of fine pens. Nice store, super people. Of course, the Fountain Pen Hospital (have not been there yet)

Go to the link below to find most of the above and other Stipula dealers in the States:

Good Luck, all of the stores above are staffed by great people. Go to as many as you can. New York is my favorite pen city.

PatientType & AKAGodSent & Karmakoda,

Thank you all for the wonderful information. Based on PatientType's review of Art Brown I am definitely going to have to go there when I'm in the city this Tuesday. Hopefully, they have the Stipula Vespri Siciliani or the Novecento?

I'm also looking forward to seeing their ink selection!

Thanks,

Haven't been there in years, but Berliner Pens was a great shop for vintage pens of the first order.

Caught them on a day when I was the only customer, and must have spent an hour just talking.

Enjoy the trip,

gary

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
