3 Must Have NOODLERS

Recommended Posts

Yay, a good friend of mine is going home to The States for a holiday and has agreed to bring back some ink bottles for me. So this is my opportunity to finally get my hands on the coveted Noodlers inks as they are not available in South Africa.

I don't want to push my luck so I think three bottles will be enough to ask my friend to bring back.

May I ask if I could have your suggestions as to which three you would deem essential Noodlers inks as an introduction. I will order them on-line - delivered to his address in Florida and then by early 2010 should have them in my inky little paws.

Wow, that's a tough one without knowing what color's you like. But I'll tell you what I like. Ottoman-Azure is great if you're a blue lover; Marine Green is a superb green for the green lover; and Mandalay Maroon if you like wine-reddish-burgundy type's.

These are among my favorites.

Hope this helps.

and if you like brown, the semi-waterproof Walnut is dark & beautiful, giving great shading in the proper nibs.

I have decided against using much Noodler's, thus decreasing any worries about maintenance, but I keep my Walnut because I haven't seen any alternative in other brands. I have been successful in mixing a look-alike by blending Pelikan black and brown 1:1. It is close but no cigar, more like Parker Penman Mocha.

Don't stop at 3 bottles; you'll kick yourself afterwards.

I'm a fan of their Golden Brown, but if you Google the brand you'll find sites like http://www.noodlersink.com/samples.html on which you can check out the colours and make up your own mind... of course there is some chance of colour variation depending on your monitor, but it should give you some idea what you might like.

And thanks for the heads up about non-availability in RSA... must take my sister some when I next visit her in P.E.

Cheers,

Glenn.

If you are looking to pick up a black ink, then 'Heart of Darkness' is certainly the way to go. It's a real black black, and is also waterproof and 'eternal'.

More of a lurker than a poster.

That's a tough question. There are so many Noodler's inks and we don't know how your preferences lean.

I'd say that the basic Noodler's Black, a bulletproof ink, is a good idea.

Avoiding the various Noodler's inks that are exclusives to particular retailers, I'd suggest that Standard Green and Standard Brown might be nice. Each is the color named plus a little bit of Noodler's Black, which makes it an ink that will leave something behind if there's some watery accident or something with what you've written.

Wow, there are just so many choices. What do you generally like in inks? Is there an ink color you've been after for a while?

To me Legal Lapis is a must.

Pushkin from the Russian series is a great green, and Noodler's bulletproof black is mandatory :).

Ink is such a personal choice.. Mid-true red, Red Fox..? or more yellow, tomato red..? or on the other side, red with blue?

You really should look at a color wheel, define the primary/secondary colors which please you, and note where they fall on the wheel. towards which color, and how bright, or greyed you prefer.

My own preference is Luxury Blue, Fox Red.. but they may be imcompatible to your eye, or uses.

The standard black is the brand's first and, in my opinion, best bulletproof ink (but I haven't tried Bad Blue Heron) with the best combination of drying time and performance on the worst paper.

1. Noodler's Black. It's a must have.

2. Noodler's blue. Not only a great ink on its own, but can be mixed with black for a range of blue-blacks, all with a bulletproof component.

3. A spare bottle of Noodler's black!

I don't use Noodler's much any more. But the one Noodler's ink I still love is FPN's own Dumas Tulipe Noire - just the most beautiful purple/black color, not like any other I've found.

Noodler's Bulletproof Black is the way to go. Although I've tried other blacks (like Heart of Darkness), I've found that the bulletproof black is best in terms of drying time, minimum bleedthrough (this is on your average looseleaf paper).

I'd also recommend Tiananmen. Even though it isn't touted as waterproof, I have been able to successfully highlight over it without streaking so I'd say it is high on the waterproof meter. It's a "dried-blood" color. Really unique, and pops out at you from the paper. (And although this has nothing to do with the actual ink itself) It has one of the most interesting Noodler's labels :)

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
