Pen Barrel Is Too Big -- Uncomfortable To Hold

all my hues

Recommended Posts

I recently got a new Lamy Studio, but discovered to my dismay that the pen is fatter than other pens I have in my collection, and so it makes it uncomfortable to write for long periods of time. Will I get used to it, or should I just return it and buy a pen with a slimmer barrel? (I have small hands, in case you couldn't tell.... XD)

Which Studio did you get?

I find that the ones with the slick metal sections give me hand fatigue as well, because of the grip I have to maintain so my fingers won't slip.

I have the Palladium/CT version and find it comfortable to use despite my small hands, more so than my Parker 100 - I can comfortably use my MUY 90 & '31 Duofold Jnr streamlined unposted. I think it's likely the contrast with what you are used to is the major factor, and if you continue to mostly use slimmer pens, the Studio will always feel strange and you are unlikely to enjoy it. Sadly, on that basis, 'bye-'bye Studio!

My thoughts, for what they're worth. Glenn.

I agree, T. You will never get used to a pen that is the wrong size for your hand. I know from experience.

(BTW, have I answered your letter yet?)

I've actually had decent luck in getting used to sections that were initially either too narrow (Sahara) or too wide (Cum Laude) for me, so I dunno. If you're really concerned about it, though, I'd return it while you still can.

I have the stainless steel one with the black gripping section. It's not hand fatigue from gripping the pen, but from the width of the barrel itself (I can tell from how my hand aches).

Thanks for your input so far, everyone...I only just received it in the mail yesterday, so there's some time for me to decide whether or not I want to return it, I think...

I'd never worried about a pen's width before; I'd never had this issue come up, since all of my pens happen to be slim.

You shouldn't really have to get used to a pen. It should just fit. Exchange it for another pen and if that's not possible put it up for sale/trade on the FPN marketplace.

Your hand aches from using it. Not good. Exchange for a more appropriate pen for your grip/hand.

trade it here for something different

The voice of this guitar of mine, at the awakening of the morning, wants to sing its joy;

I sing to your volcanoes, to your meadows and flowers, that are like mementos of the greatest of my loves;

If I am to die away from you, may they say I am sleeping, and bring me back home.

The worst thing about not trading it in is that you might then lose interest in writing with FPs in general. The pen itself won't give a heck, but you will.

I disagree with the previous.

My Omas Milord felt far too thick and was so awkward I nearly sold it. Yet I gave it time. Over time it became my hands-down favorite. Can't put it away uninked.

It's your decision, and whether you sell or keep it is neither right nor wrong. But it won't cost anything to wait a while.

Put the pen up for sale in the forum...

Not just cuz it was a bit uncomfy, but also it was an impulse purchase that I"m feeling guilty about XD

      Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

      It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

      Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

      Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

      @asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
