Naginata Togi nibs from Sailor

Thanks for this: I'll have to give it a try. It looks like you've found the secret to this pen!

Here's a photo of the nib showing the shape:

Edit to say that, having given this a quick try, I'm getting more variation. Good tip! I'll need to work on this...

Great, let me know how you get on.

This is one of the reasons why I thought it would be great to have a place where speciality nib information was pinned. I still have to work out the differences between the cross emperor and the cross music emperor, and searching the forums didn't help much.

I think the cross nib has a flattened surface so that the line is broad on both left/right and up/down strokes

The cross music has a more rounded or point surface so that the line is broad on the left/right stroke but narrow on the up/down stroke

thanks Siv, that makes sense. I have a cross emperor that was made by the elder Nagahara-san himself some years ago and it looks nothing like the production model. It is an amazing nib though. It looks like this one here: http://www.stylophilesonline.com/archive/jan03/02rant.htm

The thread has a bunch of useful information now.

pixwriter, fantastic sample page showing how versatile this nib can be in the right hands.

But...I'm thinking now this nib was made for the Japanese market to write in Japanese, and writing in another language will be a chore. If one wants line variation and flex, then there's a nib for that, designed for the western style of writing that wouldn't require so much work to use.

JELL-O, IT'S WHATS FOR DINNER!

I pulled out my Naginata Broad last night and started practicing. About 10% of the time I can get line variation like pix' sample above and the rest of the time the line variation is not so noticable. I also find that it works better if you write fast! The "gh" combination is one where I get a decent result.

I'm taking my Togi and my notebook to work and I'm going to practice more!

No, flex nibs are MUCH harder work. (Though I love them) The NMF is fantastic and fast and easy, for great effects at normal writing speeds, honestly.

It is just a feedback thing, angling the nib slightly and seeing what happens.

Its a little like a clutch and gear change in a manual(shiftstick) car, it is not something you can overanalyse, more instinctive muscle memory.

Siv is right, 'gh' or 'ghijklm' all looped together is a great way to get a feel for what the nib does.

Thanks for the review. I think I'm going to pass. Sounds like something perfect for Kanji, etc and not so much for English

This is a great thread, as I'm trying to figure out which nib to get with a Sailor 1911.

Both the Naginata and Cross Music are on the list---as is the Zoom.

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

  • 3 weeks later...

I had a N-MF and now have a N-B. The N-MF showed more noticable line variation in my writing but the N-B can actually have a much greater range when some attention is paid to how you use it.

In the end, I don't think I am sophisticated enough to get the best from the pen and I stick to stubs to add character to my writing. I do, however, keep the N-B for really fat juicy signatures.

Siv, Did you ever post a writing sample of your N-B nib? I thought I saw one but cannot seem to find it again.

Please advise,

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
