How to refill a Conway Stewart

Hi,

I bought my first Conway Stewart. I am wondering how should I fill it with ink.

My idea is I should pull the pressure lever out, dip the pen into the ink and then push the lever back in.

Would appreciate some advice.

Regards

Joy

Okay, so a lever filler.

Yup, lever out, nib in ink, lever in, count slowly to ten.

Usually that will do it.

Care Instructions - Lever Fill

1. Remove cap, lift lever up from barrel.

2. Insert nib into ink bottle ensuring nib is completely submerged below surface of ink.

3. Pull lever forward towards nib until resistance is felt (75-90 degree angle to the barrel).

4. Repeat forward and backward action with lever for 2-4 times until no further air bubbles can be seen escaping from nib and wait for about 15 seconds before repeating the action.

5. Leave the nib fully submerged in the ink bottle for about 15 seconds after final action before removing and with a tissue or similar material wipe clean the front section of the pen to remove any excess ink from the filling process.

Cleaning the Pen:

To clean pen, immerse the nib in warm soapy water and repeat the filling procedures above. repeat the filling and discharge procedure several times to prevent any cross contamination of ink colours.

Two questions - as I am on my first ever lever, a Churchill - and want to get this right...

1. Under the above instructions, if you keep working the lever (2-4 times) why would more ink come in? Would we just be pumping ink out and then back in again?

2. Will a lever filled work with a Visconti inkpot? I do a lot of international travel (right now with Pelikan M800's mostly) and the inkpot is nice way to carry ink and also get a total fill.

Thanks in advice for you help!

Hi,

The reason we suggest for you to repeat is because we are trying to make sure that you expel all the air out of the ink sac.

Hopefully a member of this forum will be able to help regarding Visconti's inkpot.

Kind regards,

I suspect the multiple workings of the lever are to make sure that all the little crannies in a modern feed get wet-- with a vintage pen (and the relatively simple feed that implies) one round is generally sufficient.

...unless modern C-S pens have a breather tube in them. I've not actually investigated one of the current sort.

It's mainly pens, just now....

Oh, good heavens. He's got a blog now, too.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
