Nice Retractable Pens

veri

Recommended Posts

All,

Retractable pens have become something of a simple pleasure lately. I typically have a Uni-Ball Signo 207 in my pocket despite having a few nice fountain pens around, and I'm looking for a quality retractable to scratch this little itch of mine.

The VP/Decimo is a thought, but I'm also open to other nice retractables (particularly if they can take a gel refill). Any thoughts?

how about the new lamy dialog 3?

We had a chance to see the (link here: Lamy Dialog 3) when our Lamy rep brought it around and we absolutely loved it. Yes it may come with a pricier tag than some of Lamy's other premium fountain pens but as soon as you turn the barrel you feel like you are holding a piece of the future. Dare I say it, it must have been near the same way it felt to hold a Lamy 2000 back in 1966.

The twist action is really smooth and works perfectly with the nib, cover and clip. But I am biased as I work for a store that loves Lamy..

We are expecting our Dialog 3 Pens to arrive any day now!

1. Visconti Metropolis

2. Stipula Iris

4. Stipula Etruria d'Inverno (and the Amber equivalent whose name I forget)

5. Stipula Monna Lisa (kind of small pen)

8. Chopard line that includes the Gold Cube (made by Stipula)

9. The really high-end Stipulas based on the Laurus body (modification of the Iris), like the Trevi

Those ought to keep you for a while.... (I have 1, 3, 4, 6, 7, and 8)

Some really nice pieces there; thanks.

the lamy dialog is running $220+ isn't it? just curious

Last I knew/looked, it was a little under $300, but that was around the time it was just being released. I've been a little out of "pen world" lately, so... I don't know.

Ballpoints can be horrible performers. BICs used to be so good, but are horribly variable. They also used to glob up.

I dislike my MP Meisterstuck refill . . . it writes kind of dry and thin . . . there are some paper surfaces it won't work on.

Parker makes an excellent writer and has a generous refill. There is a good variety of styles . . . the better ones harder to find anymore.

Papermate's gel refill is a superb performer, albeit small.

Let's not forget the Fisher Spacepen. A fairly generous refill for a small pen, but a wide variety of styles, and reasonably prices. I have the new 'bullet' pen, seated in a .375 H&H shell casing . . . for liberal customers to use when signing my credit card slips.

I'm amazed I forgot the Montblanc Boheme, but then again I don't own one.

That's an interesting thing to say about a pen apparently built from (long expired) Sheaffer patents of the 1950s... ;)

Does not always write loving messages.

Does not always foot up columns correctly.

Does not always sign big checks.

Parker Jotter (lots of colors and finishes to choose from) with a Monteverde Soft Roll superbroad (1.4) ballpoint refill or the very smooth Visconti Gel (AA38B) ballpoint (1.0) refill.

I've grown to like the Pilot Capless / Vanishing Point, the "Fat" versions. Especially the "LE colors" are nice and joyful ;) The Decimo is a notch too thin for my big paws, though.

The big question is just how heavy is this beast?

I tend to buy pens and then sell them later at a loss since they are too heavy to be usable....

Most of the retractables are heavy.

I wanted to like the Vanishing Point, and before I got pens I liked more, I liked it a lot. That said, it really doesn't suit me now.

On the other hand, these do:

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
