I'm having a problem with the approximation of "sports" - any sport - in a sentence using "creative" and "genius;" chess, maybe, if chess qualifies as a "sport"....

"And gentlemen in England, now abed, shall think themselves accursed they were not here, and hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks that fought with us upon Saint Crispin's Day."

No offense meant toward Ali, but... Dude...

Stradivarius

Modiglioni

Ali

WHAT?!

Start another series or something if you want to pay (well-deserved) respects, but...

Dude.

:bonk:

+1 on this.

Ali!?! What are they thinking? No offense to Ali but his image doesn't fit quite well with FPs. This is like MB creating a Tiger Wood limited edition. I just don't see a sport genius fit well into the FPs world. Writers, composers, music geniuses, yes, but sport talents just does not fit well.

Aside from his NOT being a creative genius, he signs his autographs with a sharpie! :roflmho:

Seriously, I've just looked at specs and photos of the pen, and, sorry, but you've gotta be kidding, Montegrappa! $2,595.00 MSRP for a cheesy, cheap looking pen with Ali's signature taking up almost the entire length of a white (gasp!) cap. Cartridge/converter, on top of it. I have to admit: in this instance, Ali seems to be a creative genius compared to whomever designed this pen.

It's part of the Montegrappa Icons series, not Genio Creativo.

Just emphasizing what Enrico already pointed out. The M. Ali pen is part of the new "Icons" series and not the "Creative Genius".

Yes, I see that this is correct; perhaps MG's CEO shouldn't have said otherwise in a published interview ...

That aside, I really feel this is a backward direction for MG; they're venturing into Krone territory with this series. So, who's the next "icon?" Madonna? Britney? Paris? Okra (er, Oprah)? Jerry Springer? Bring on the cheese, bring on the sleaze ...

Well CEOs, among others, often don't talk to marketing, even on those occasions when marketing makes a good move. :roflmho:

Point taken though on this series' move into popular culture. Perhaps they think it will broaden the appeal of fountain pens. But when college students think Beethoven is dog (official Mindset list here), what are you going to do?

If the pen was gorgeous, I'd ignore the dedication. But these are just plain UGLY. At least Krone has pretty colors.

Guess I'd better collect the classic MG stuff while I can still get it as it appears they're on their way down and out with their current direction.

Looks like MG has started a new "Icons" series. There seems to be no mention of any further editions in the Creative Genius series which is very disappointing. I was attracted to the first two pens and bought both. Looks like the CG series may just fade into the past as MG tries to separate itself from its Richmont influence of the past.

I understand the Ali Icon pen is now out and available. I happened to stumble on to it at an online pen site. Looked to the MG site for more info. No mention!

Cheers

Got to hold the Ali today. The gold w/o the diamonds. Plus held the rollerball. Seems umm, well, let's just say not up to the standard of the Creative Genius series, IMHO, so it's definitely a new direction (the "Icons") for MG and I'm not going to wonder about nor anticipate any future "Icon" pen.

The Ali seemed not really lucite nor resin, nor a softer (if that's the right description?) ebonite, just sort of a hard white (not very nice) plastic. However, MG really nailed the black paneled white boxing trunks for certain, and the glove or boot laces are very clever in the clip. It's a bit top heavy w/o posting. But a plastic section (unlike the Creative Genius) allowed me to balance it ok w/o slipping. I didn't get to dip the nib. But the engraved Ali exultant w/ raised arms looks appropriate, and "ALI" is engraved nicely matched in nib and top of clip.

For grins I also tried on the size 10 leather boxing gloves that come with some of the promotional early sets. They feel real to me. I couldn't imagine getting hit by Ali when he was wearing these. Not nearly enough padding.....

Anyway, Kenro told my store that a new (third) Creative Genius was in the works for next year to join the Strad and the Modigliani. Didn't say what it was unfortunately.

Anyone else get to hold the Ali yet? What do you think? Any clues as to the next Creative Genius?

Michael

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
