Carrying Question

It is me again :)

For my business I do not have to get dressed up (dress shirts with pockets). I wear shorts and t-shirts in the summer and jeans and t-shirts in the winter. I asked the other day about carrying the pen in my pocket and I was told that is a bad idea and with scratch and damage the pen. So I purchased a MB single pen case from Eric on this forum. With my company I always need a pen to write 24 hrs a day, as I dont know when I will get a business call. So my question now is, for you guys that dont wear dress shirts or may not wear them on weekends: 1) Do you still always carry your MB pens? 2) If you use a pen case, how do you carry it with shorts, jeans, pants? Do you just put the case in a pocket? Is it too bulky? I assume if I am wearing a jacket once the weather gets colder I can put the pen case in a jacket pocket.

Just curious. I like asking questions about my new pen. I would have blemished the heck out of my MB rb if I didnt ask about pocket carry and you guys didnt suggest a case. So how do you carry your pens when not in a shirt pocket or carry a pen case.

Thanks for you all being patient and helping a newbie.

I think he's looking for a serious answer. I usually wear cargo shorts in the summer and will put my pens in a case and then in the shorts pocket. As far as jeans go, I don't like putting my pen cases in the front pocket since I fear when I sit down I could put undue stress on the pen. The back pocket, obviosuly no good. So if you plan on wearing jeans, I'd wear a shirt with at least a pocket on it.

Man 'purse' or not, I use the one pictured in the centre to carry my pens (in pen cases) and a couple Moleskines etc. It's perfect for short trips.

Daily wear: I always have two FPs in my shirt pocket; I rarely carry FPs in my trouser pockets in fear that they might get damaged.

I am on call 24/7. If I were you, I would consider carrying a less expensive FP and a pocket briefcase. I carry one of my less valuable FPs’ often either my Lamy Safari or Rotring Core (indestructible and rugged) when I’m in shorts and tee shirt. I find the pocket briefcase is indispensable.

I carry my pens all the time. And I wear jeans/shorts/casuals most of my work days. I never had any problem carrying my pens in a montblanc case in my jeans pocket. The great thing about some of the MB cases is that they are semi-hard. If you don't wear excessively tight jeans, I don't see (neither had) any issue with carrying pens in a carrying case in the pocket. I would never ever never ever put a pen in there without it being in a carrying case - the reason is that the cap can unscrew exposing the nib to the forces of the pocket and potentially destroying your nib. But in a carrying case - no problem! (Some people might conjecture that putting in a jeans pocket might put a bending force on your pen - but seeing that the pen is vertically parallel to your thigh, there is no reason to expect any awkward force, unless you specifically put it horizontally and the pocket is tight)

Another alternative, is to carry them in a small bag. Some camera carrying cases work ideal for this, and they don't look awkward (no one, of course, needs to know that you are not carrying a camera but a pen :))

This second solution is also scalable if you like carrying many pens :) Some of the bigger cases can easily fit 10+ pens - don't ask why some one might want to carry 10 pens. Just know that there are people out there who do that :)

Of course, the extreme limit is carrying an actual bag full of pens with you. A laptop bag works great for that :)

I use Levenger's International Pocket Briefcase to double as my wallet and writing pad. It has an inside pocket for a pen, so I don't need to worry about scratches or nicks. I will admit that it is a bit bulky, but its utility makes up for its size. I use it with index cards, but it could also easily accommodate a cahier or small notebook. I've been carrying this for three years and have never had a problem with carrying it in jeans (though I've never put it in the back pocket with a pen inside).

My larger supplies (notebook, planner, pen wrap, etc) are carried in my bag, which is not always with me, so the pocket briefcase makes for a good compromise.

I do not get dressed up for work like you. For the past 5 years I have carried a starwalker bp in my front jean pocket and I have had only one issue I bent a clip on one but it was repaired for free at a MB boutique. I also have a mb 2 pen pouch. When I carry it I carry it in my back pocket it is to bulky in the front pocket. As far as the fountain pens go always carry in a case the cap will twist off and leak in your pocket. But I never leave the house without at least 1mb no matter what I am wearing.

I always carry my messenger bag with me. It holds my pen case and sketchbook and all the other (Potty Mouth) I carry around. Sometimes in summer I carry a small moleskine in my front pocket and a Sailor sapparro mini--yes it is scratched all to heck but that pen was bought to carry in my front jeans pocket. My MB's only get carried in my bag or a shirt pocket.

I have used a two-pen case that has a belt loop on the back. I find this to be more comfortable than hooking the clip on my t-shirt collar, and it seems to protect the pens quite well.

I've carried the same LeGrand BP for the last 11 years, 365 days per year. I carry it in a shirt pocket or if no pocket, I clip it to my golf shirt or T shirt. I rarely go anywhere without it. Sure, there's a few scratches after 11 years, but it just adds some 'character'!

On the other hand, I only carry my FPs in a case in my computer bag, so they're not with me all the time, but they're well protected.

Hello,

when I need to minimize my load-out, I use a chamois 'sleeve' for my pen. It is the minimum size, and has so far prevented the pen from sliding out of my pocket. It also has a belt loop, if my shorts or trousers don't have pockets. In the absence of belt & pockets, I just use a safety pin.

I believe that if one's gear is good quality, then it should be sufficiently robust to be used pretty much anywhere. (I use a Leica M4, which I bought new when I got my 1st Degree, that gets no special treatment / foam-hermetic container.) Otherwise, just get a space pen, and wear it on a chain 'round your neck.

Best Regards,

Sandy1

  • 2 weeks later...

my $.02 Pen case = man bag (murse)

Clip it under you t-shirt collar on the right side (if you are right handed.) So the only visible parts are the star and the clip. People think it's a mic for a cell phone. Also, you don't look goofy pretentious whipping out a pen case and your pockets are free for other stuff.

I am retired. I don't dress up for work. (Grin!) I am still active, however, and I carry pens and paper all the time. I do not carry my MB's out of the house. Those pens I do carry, I put into a leather pen case or a pen wrap. I have been using fabric pen wraps more and more over the past three years. I usually carry a backpack, so I put my writing materials into that. I think a packpack is far more versatile and useful than any briefcase.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
