Montblanc Year of the Golden Dragon

In this posting I am selling a Montblanc Year of the Golden Dragon fountain pen. The pen has never been used. I can't imagine the pen was ever dipped (and when I look at it under a loupe I see no evidence of dipping). The nib is a M. The condition of this pen is absolutely mint. There are no blemishes on the pen. There are no blemishes on the box. The condition is perfect.

Everything that came in the original purchase (in 2000) is included. The white cardboard sleeve, the inner cardboard box, the wooden box, the pen (of course), and the manual.

My selling price is $4500. This includes shipping and insurance to the continental US. Another FPNer is selling a sealed version at https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/in...howtopic=122048 so if you want a sealed version you should look at that posting.

I had never seen this pen in person before I acquired it. I hunted this pen for about a year before I found it at a price I found reasonable. I wanted to buy this pen because it is one of only three modern pens based on the 139 design (the others being the Hemingway and the Dumas).

I write with all of my pens. For new pen purchases, I have a bit of an elaborate intake process. I place the pen uninked in my pen tray. Over the course of a few days, I pick it up while I am writing and switching pens to see if it makes the cut. If it does, I ink it and keep it. If it does not, I sell it. This pen has been in my tray for months now without being inked so I have hemmed and hawed over this pen much more than any other pen.

My honest assessment is that given its price I would rather spend the money on other pens. So it is not so much that I do not like the pen as I would rather allocate the money differently. I can believe some people will have the same view (because you could buy a Hemingway for less than this pen) which is why I share it.

The positives about this pen are:

1. The 139 shape is fantastic. I love writing with my other modern-139-based pens

2. The barrel is functional and clean; it is black and has an ink window; the color is great

3. The dragon that forms the clip is stunning and a piece of art

The negatives of this pen are:

1. The dragon clip dominates the pen. It is almost too large. It is heavy enough that it shifts the pen's center of gravity if it was posted. The clip is large enough that it makes the pen not fit in my pen cases.

2. It is expensive relative to the other modern 139 pens

I sold a Qing dynasty pen a week ago. My opinion on that pen was that while it was visually stunning, its dimensions seemed out of whack so I did not see how it could be a writing pen. I do not feel that way about the Year of the Golden Dragon. This pen can be a writing pen. Its dimensions are essentially identical to the Hemingway (save for the difference in the pen clip of course)

The white outer sleeve still has its cellophane (although it is no longer sealed so one side is open):

Inside the cardboard sleeve is another cardboard box that looks like the wood box. It also has its cellophane:

The wood box is beautiful:

and has a label on the front like all the limited editions:

The presentation of these limited edition pens are just stunning:

Paypal is my preferred form of payment. My price includes shipping by priority mail (plus insurance) to any location in the continental US.

I have been on ebay for 10+ years buying and selling with 100% feedback. If you search my FPN posts you will see that I have also bought and sold several MBs in the marketplace. I think it is fair to say that my descriptions are very conservative and that I pack my items extremely carefully. You will not be disappointed by this purchase. If you find that the item does not match my description, I will gladly refund your purchase (but of course my description is accurate so this is not an issue; but for the buyer's comfort I have no problem honoring this claim)

First PM gets it. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

I have received a few inquiries about trades.

At this point, I am only looking for an Imperial Dragon so I would accept an Imperial Dragon and cash for this pen. The only other pens of high interest to me are the MB Pope Julius II 4810 and 888.

Just want to drop a testimonial for Sean here :-)

I just recently had a tremendously flawless and fantastic transaction here with Sean and it left me with tingly vibes even as I speak of it... you see, I had my eye on the MB Dumas for a loooong time, but somehow it eluded me, until I chanced the sale by Sean for a Dumas. Straight away I PM'ed him and he had the pen on hold for me. However, much to my chagrin and embarrassment, a payment from my customer which was scheduled to be cleared DIDN't clear in time. So I had to inform Sean to hold off sending the pen to me..

Guess what Sean did? He said something akin to "FPN has the most trusting members, therefore I can send the pen to you first, and when you can, just Paypal me the money". I was stunned...

Anyway to cut a long story short, in due time the payment cleared, and I of course being one of the "trusting members" :-) did send his money to Sean, but NOT before the pen reaching me first!

So, please purchase this pen with your ease of mind. Couple of adjectives describing Sean comes to mind: integrity, trustworthy, and caring. You cannot find a seller with more <insert previous adjectives> than Sean!

BTW, this is NOT a Lamy, price was close to a grand initially! :-)

Thank Wai-Sun and GP for the kind endorsements. I do appreciate it. The community aspect of FPN really does make the for sale board a great (and stress free) place to do business. And I can say that from experience as both a buyer and seller.

Since it has been a few days and I have not received one cash offer, that is a clear sign that my price must not be aligned with the market. I will drop the price by $500 to $4000, which includes shipping and insurance to the continental US.

Like I wrote in my first posting, I do believe this is a great pen. It is just not the pen for me.

And if someone wants to try to set up a complete or partial trade, the pens I am currently looking for are: MB Imperial Dragon, MB Copernicus 4810, MB Copernicus 888, MB Pope Julius 4810, MB Pope Julius 888

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
