Touch choice! Get both eventually, but if you can get a deal on a Solitiaire (new or minimially used) comparable in price to a new 149, I'd get the Solitiaire first. The 149 is more abundant.

Which sterling silver Soltaire are you interested in? There are 4.

Here's the 149 and the 146 barleycorn. Note, they are similar in size, but the 149 nib is much larger, and it has a thicker section..

Whichever you choose, at least try a stubbish MB broad. They are a joy.

This is one time I'd come down on the sterling. I like silver, I like heavier pens, and you're less likely to see one of these. The 149 will be there. It's the perfect size and love the longer nib, but they're easier to find/get.

I would prefer the silver 146. It's heavier, has a thinner section and is really a joy to write with. I find it better and more beautiful than the 149, especially the only silver one with a medium or broad nib.

Of course the price plays a role. Don't pay too much :happyberet:

Good luck with your decision.

I bought the 146 sterling silver pinstripe new from FPH, $950 --- ouch !

But no regrets ....

That's pretty much the best going rate on retail price. Very hard to find discounts on any MB products.

I have my eye on a sterling pinstripe with gold trim - a very classic pen. The 149 would be ideal if it came also in sterling, but you can only find it in black resin, which is a little irksome.

It's tough to decide but at present I am leaning towards the 149 for price reasons.

Here are mine, I purchased the Solitaire first, mainly because I got a real good discount. The price difference made the 149 seem like a bargain also.

Yes, it is a beautiful pen

I am thinking of getting another one -- M146 plaladium plate facet. It is just beautiful, without any gold trims.

Did you try asking Worldlux what their prices are? I looked around a while back, and they had the best prices for Montblancs, better than FPH, too. When I got my 149 from them 3 years ago, it was $465. I'm sure the price is higher now, but it still might be the lowest out there.

The silver 146 looks really nice, but I think I might still go for the 149. It's a classic, after all, and one of the best pen designs out there.

The first time I handled a Solitaire I was struck by their beauty and the heirloom quality of these pens. Photos go only so far. The materials are so beautiful, but the design remains classic and uncluttered like any MS. I really like that combination. An elegant bling.

Took the words out of my mouth, GP! Another vote for the SS 146.
