Looking for a unlined cream paper, large size....

AlaskanWriter

Recommended Posts

Good Day All, :happyberet:

I've always loved heavier textured papers for writing, and recently started to like off white/cream better than white. So, then I lucked out when I got the Ciak, it being both and then taking FPs so good. As to lines, my writing is neater, spaced better etc. when I don't have to follow lines... Always thought that strange, but I just write better without them.

Anyway,

I've searched here, and found a couple older threads on cream/off white unlined paper, but without any references to what I have tried, I am scarred to order stuff to try...

So,

What I am looking for is cream color, unlined, as much like the paper in my Ciak journal as possible. I just really like the color and texture, its great to write on and easy on the eyes.

I'd like regular loose paper, not book form, say 8.5"x11", or close, for general writing and letters.

I'd LOVE big enough to fold to 8"x10"ish for my own book binding, so, say 16"x10" or there abouts, but I doubt I'll find that easily.(or easily without having to order a LOT in bulk )

The best info I can get for the weight/thickness of what I like, is 110gr, from this page(through my poor translation... ); Ciak Manufacturer product page

Although, thats not exactly the journal I have... but its the only ones listed on that site that is the right size, that I can find, anyway. :hmm1:

Other than that, I've no idea how to cross reference qualities of papers, to get what I want..

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks!

Gary.

I'm not sure that I entirely understand what you're looking for but I'll take a stab at two things that might help. First, have you checked out the Southworth's http://southworth.com/ line of paper? They have some nice, heavier weight cream papers plus Staples carries their line so it's easy to purchase. Second would be to go to a good, old fashioned, print shop and see if they can order some paper for you that can then be cut to the size you like. Good luck!

Clairefontaine is rumored to have 100g loose sheets coming out any day now. Until then, have you looked at the Basics Sketchbook? Same size as a 4x6 journal but blank pages.

I checked http://www.desktopsupplies.com/paperexplained.html and found that 28lb is 105gsm and 32lb is 120gsm. Strathmore is another excellent brand. I buy paper at my local Xpedx. It is a supplier to the local printers and sell to whoever walks in the door. Xpedx does not have any stores in Alaska. But there should be something similar. Paper Mill Store sells online and has a wide selection of paper. www.thepapermillstore.com

If you're looking for loose sheets for letters and what not, you might want to look at Lalo Verge de France and Original Crown Mill. These would be in Euro A4 so not exactly 8.5 X 11 -- I think a quarter inch narrower by a quarter inch longer. Both come in ivory/off-white/creme or whatever the not-blinding-white is called. Crane makes a nice (somewhat toothy) letter stationery in the slightly smaller monarch size. Nice thick, stiff paper.

For journals, I haven't found anything ideal since Lalo discontinued its A4 journals, but I have been using Kunst & Papier journals.

Good luck, and let us know what you find.

If you're buying ISO paper sizes then look for A3 not A4. A3 is twice the size of A4 and you can fold it in half and make an A4 sized book...

Unfortunately I can't easily find ISO sizes here in the states... :(

Ahh, yes, re-reading it now, I was not all that clear.

Simply put, I want exactly the paper that is in my Ciak journal, or as close to the same paper as possible. In A4 or equivalent size, or if possible, A3 -- Thanks! Zwack, I know nothing about these naming conventions... Thanks Brock, I found a conversion table at paper.com, but wasn't sure if I was reading it right.

I was/am hopping to find someone here that has, or has handled the Ciak paper, and possibly know of something similar in loose sheets.

If not, then I'll just try to order samples/as small of quantities as possible of recamended brands till I find something similar...

At the least, I now have a search string; 28LB A3 or A4...

Glad to be of assistance. The international paper sizes have the useful property that the next size smaller is half the size and the next size larger is twice the size. The numbering runs from smaller to larger while the paper sizes run the other way. Most people don't usually need to go above A3 but I believe it has been extended up to A000 for some blueprints. The nearest equivalent to US letter is A4. Notepads tend to vary between A6 and A4. Depending on use, A7 is getting a bit small for practical purposes.

I got some lovely stationery from these people in Scotland - very small personal business - great customer care - samples happily sent until you know exactly what it is you want!

I have Ciak journals - so know the paper you are looking for - so think you should at least look at their site -

www.piccolopress.co.uk - you can email print@piccolopress.co.uk and ask for Margaret Hendry and tell her I sent you!

Just mention Tasmania - she'll remember me.

Good luck with your search.

PS - I wasn't charged for my samples - as I wanted plain paper - so I hope the same applies to you.

Edited to add the PS

Chris, Thanks so much! I shall indeed contact them.

I did some digging, simply on color and weight, and them a brand review or two here, and have settled on getting some Wausau-Royal-Fiber, from what I can tell, it should treat FPs rather well, and is the right weight, and close in color, and the texture sounds good, should have some tooth, not too smooth.

http://www.thepapermillstore.com/product.php?productid=10237

Gonna have to dig around and see if I can get less than a full ream to start with though...

Mohawk Opaque sounds good too, on the same criteria, and a review or two of the brand quality... And it I have found in a cheap small pack of large sheets ;)

As long as I can find a brand review here, or even better a paper line review/thoughts on it, and can get less than a ream to try, I can live with random testing... Who knows, maybe I'll find something I like better, Right?

Thanks for the links AlaskanWriter! I like the last paper, from Mohawk!

Good luck with finding your perfect paper - I still can't resist looking even though the Piccolo Press paper is perfect!

Life would be so much easier if there were less variety..........and we would get a lot more writing done!!!

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
