Pens that are slim, yet on the heavy side

So I've noticed that we have several "slim pen" threads and even a "slim and light" thread. Figured it was time to start a "slim and relatively heavy" thread since that's what I seem to gravitate towards.

My tastes have been shaped by the Cross Classic Century, which was my favorite pen to write with till I both of mine a few years ago. One due to carelessness, and the other was replaced by Cross with the Century II when I sent it in for repair. Ugh. Ever since then, I've been searching for the perfect pen and have figured this much out: I like very slim, long pens that are almost top heavy when posted and have a very strong preference for metal bodies/barrels and springy springy nibs.

So far the following are at the top of my list:

Sailor Chalana

Waterman Exclusive

Caran d'Ache Ecridor

I'm still looking into the Schaeffer Targa, Lamy CP1, ST Dupont Classique, and a few others mentioned in previous threads. Was hoping to get input on springiness of nibs and any suggestions for other pens I might have missed. Thanks!!

I might recommend looking out for a Montblanc S-Line pen from the 1990s. I have one and it is slim but heavy, because it is made of metal. However, the nib is definitely not springy.

Have you thought about the Cross Signature. It's nib section is based on the CCII but I think it's barrel is slimmer

and definately longer. The nib section is supposidly interchangable with the CCII but the stock Signature nib has

some much nicer engraving on it. You will run into one small issue with the Cross factory you've experienced before

with your CCI, that being they are all but out of parts for the Signature. However, I don't think the Signature has the

rotating nib section issue the CCI had. Six months ago, all Cross had of the original nibs for exchange were B and XF.

I really don't want to sell mine (Black Lacque) but there are some on The Bay I think and I know of at least one

FPNer with the Gold plated/black lined one he'd sell. There was also one in the Marketplace in the last week or so.

It's what you ask for. A thinner, heavier pen, very well made that you certainly won't see everyday.

Oh and the CCI's come up on The Bay from time to time. I got a very nice one in 14kt last year.

Cross Townsend, too, though not so much on the springy nib.

The Celebry models from Pelikan are fairly slim and IMO somewhat heavy. I have an older style 560 and there's no discernible spring in the nib; however, I'm not sure if this is the case for newer ones.

Ferrari da Varese Savant. You won't find one thinner, and you won't find one heavier. Very pricey and hard to find, though.

I'm with Perry on the Targa recommendation!

The pelikan p390 is slim and tends towards the heavy side.

Sailor Chalanas are definitely slim, probably everyone's idea of slim, as there are sacs and cartridges this wide. They're metal cap and barrel, but I don't think they're big enough to be heavy, or long enough to be top heavy.

I've never held a Pilot Grance (Grancé), but they look skinny in the pictures and they must be metal.

Aurora Hastils are top heavy and relatively skinny. The barrel is long, putting the cap that far back.

For Sheaffer Targas, don't forget the slim version, if you can get the slim cartidges and converter. I've held a couple, but I don't remember the weight or balance.

On the lower cost side of things I'd recommend a Sheaffer Agio.

Also, add another vote for a Targa. The Targa I had had a fair stiff nib on it. I'm not sure if there were "springy" nib options.

My Waterman Harmonie has a very nice heft (brass w/lacquer I believe) and is quite slim. Exactly what I like in a pen, which is why it's used every day. There is no spring in the nib, however, but again, it's perfect for me.

How about a sterling Parker 75? It's slim, but it has what I consider a nice heft to it.

Slim Sheaffer Targas are well balanced and somewhat on the heavy side because of being made of metal. This is an exceptional pen.

Getting cartridges is difficult but the pen should come with a converter.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
