I know that I am easily please but this early Sheaffer cartridge pen arrived this morning and it is a sweetie!

Nice fine nib, still has the "insert yellow end first" cartridge inside it and the coolest green, nice unusual nib too

Those were and are very nice pens -- especially for the price (still a dollar well into the 1970s).

Does not always write loving messages.

Does not always foot up columns correctly.

Does not always sign big checks.

Hi,

I yield to no-one in my admiration of the "basic" Cartridge Pen - the model that often sold for $1.00 - but I just want to point out that this specific pen is the upmarket cousin of that model. At its introduction, its MSRP was $5.00 (and the model is in fact referred to - sometimes - as the Skripsert 500).

Better writers, all of them, than they had any right to be!

Cheers,

Jon

PS The yellow-ended cartridges are definitely early production; it became a Sheaffer talking point, after the design changed, that the cartridge could be dropped into the barrel either-end-first.

Thanks Jon, the nib looked very much the same a Lady Skripsert of mine from the mid 50s.

This green example has F8 on the nib and performed first time after having sat quietly for 30 plus years

The basic cartridge pens and their uptown cousins are still among the best value out there. I adore them and one of the first version clear balance bodied cartridge pens sits proudly among the PFMs on the top self of a display box.

I agree--the old Sheaffer CFs were among the most reliable, starts-with-no-fuss pens ever. I include the OS No Nonsense in that description; it's what I give someone who expresses an interest in trying fountain pens. And it's always a hit.
