Greetings from Rapid City, SD

Hi!

I got back into fountain pens in a roundabout manner. I've been thinking about font design, and decided I needed to know more about how letters are formed before I could go any further. Somehow, applying calligraphic strokes to vectors in Illustrator or Inkscape just didn't feel right. I used to write exclusively with fountain pens in the early 80s in college – cheap Shaeffers I bought in blister packs at the college bookstore. Sometimes I'd get one with a really great nib. Some were scratchy and never did feel right. They always ended up getting lost or taken.

I acquired a book "Logo, Font & Lettering Bible," as well as some old advertising lettering books. I got bit by the bug. Unfortunately, there aren't many fountain pens to be found in Rapid City, except for the ones in the locked carousel at OfficeDepot. I went online and started looking for ones I could afford, knowing I would have to buy them sight unseen. At that point I found this forum and began lurking and reading reviews.

Right now, I have my sights set on a Pilot Vanishing Point, when I've saved enough to order one. In the meantime, I'm trying to make friends with a Rotring Core I got on clearance at Swisher Pens. It arrived today.

Hi Deb, good to have you on board! Hope that you get on with the Rotring Core, I had one for a while but the section grip and the overall look of a slightly demented ski-pole meant that we were never to be a long-term pairing.

I really like the VP but would suggest that you try to get your hands on one to see if the clip placement bothers you. The great majority of users (me included) are fine with it, but for some it is a deal breaker. Having said that, if you can handle the Core you are set for just about anything...

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of nothing at all...

:W2FPN: Welcome!!

The VP is a very nice choice I really enjoy mine. I tried a Core but never could find a good way to hold it that fit my writing style.

Hi Deb and welcome to FPN! I have a Rotring Core and it is a fabulous pen. It certainly is a conversation starter but I don't think it would be a comfortable calligraphy pen. It's way too bulky for the purpose.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
