Advice on Toledo 900

Classics

Recommended Posts

Dear FPN'ers, :vbg:

I am thinking about purchasing a really nice pen this year.

I have been thinking about pulling a trigger on a Pelikan Toledo 900 (Vermeil) and was wondering how everyone likes or dislikes this pen.

The 900 is a perfect size pen for me, due that I have a m800 at home which I use daily. I don't mind the extra weight of the pen, I actually perfer pens with some weight.

Please let me know your thoughts.

Regards...

John

Dear John :

The Toledo 900 is, for my taste, one of the most beautiful of the Pelikan line. The two criticisms that are leveled against it are size and weight, and you've quite obviously addressed those points as not being applicable to you.

The only issues to consider then are the nib and the ink for this fine pen. I had a cursive italic nib prepared by John Mottishaw for my copy of the pen, but there are obviously other extremely well qualified nibmeisters like Deb Kinney and Richard Binder who could give you a custom nib, if such is your desire. It's worth thinking about in advance, as the nib customisation process can call for specific nib sizes (or you can buy another separate nib and keep the original). It's been commented here at FPN that Pelikan will also be producing their own italic nibs, but the timelines for release are unclear at this time.

Ink's a tricky one, as people tend to get extremely passionate on the subject, even sometimes extremist. At least initially, I'd suggest using a simple plain vanilla ink with good flow characteristics and perhaps then branch into more esoteric colours and types of ink. I've enjoyed both Parker Quink and Pelikan inks in my Toledo. The Ink Reviews and Inky Thoughts sections here are excellent sources for information. Do note that Pelikan/Chartpak has some warranty issues with certain inks, and regardless of how passionate and even immensely angry that people get on the subject of causal issues with inks and Pelikans, warranty coverage can sometimes be very important.

Welcome to the world of Toledo owners and users ! It's a delightful place to live within in my opinion. :D :clap1:

John P.

One can't go wrong with a 900 Toledo, escpecially if you are comfortable with an 800 pen. I have small woman hands, but love the feel of both pens. I do love the look of the vermeil pen, but mine is an older model in sterling silver and I love it. I like the look of it much better than the vermeil. Unfortunately they are only currently making the silver in yellow and red.

For me, the ink has been a no hands down use of what I like to think of my signature color which is Noodler's Sequoia, deep almost black, green ink.

Treat yourself for your big three zero birthday. You won't regret it.

Thank you both for the great advice on the Pelikan Toledo.

I have found some good deals out in the web today.

Thank you again!

John

My M800 and Sahara are my standard Pelikans, although I often use my M215 and M320 (in yellow) too.

But I'll get an M900 someday too, just because it is different in weight and looks.

Great pen, like most peli's. in fact the toledo is probably one of the nicest. a beautifully embellished 800 (the 090) and smaller 700. You cannot go wrong with a toledo.

BTW is 900 a good price for the new yellow. Stunning pen.

I finally pulled the trigger on the standard M900 Toledo. I love to write with the pen. The Toledo is very well balanced and it great to write with.

I loved the standard color with the gold accents.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
