Pilot 78g nib---are other Pilot nibs like this?

John Cullen

Recommended Posts

Through a trade I finally got a Pilot 78g and I have to say that I agree with those of you who have written in and said these were great little pens.

I got a medium that writes like a US/European Fine. Usually I do not like fine nibs but this one is very pleasant and very tolerant (unlike the Sailor nibs I have tried) of the angle at which it is held.

So my questions is as follows: Are other Pilot/Namiki nibs similar?

The only Namiki nibs I have used are the Bold (on a Bamboo and an 823) and they are very smooth.

Any comment is appreciated. J

Yes,

the Pilot prera, Pilot Knight and Pilot Penmanship pen use the same type of nib and are interchangeable, according to another post. You can find the info on FPN.

I have a couple of Pilot 78G F nib pen, a 78G M, a pair of Pilot Knight pens (come in M only) and a Pilot Custom 742 FA. The Knight and the 78Gs are very similar, and I do not disbelieve the nibs are interchangeable. I have actually considered taking a spare 78G F and swapping the nib with a Knight, to get a Knight with an F nib.

That being said, all my Pilot nibs are very smooth, even the F ones. The FA nib on the Custom 742 is a whole 'nuther ballgame, as it is truly flexy.

Being a Pilot fan, I own the 78G (1F, 1M, 1B), nameless tank/eyedropper (2F, 2M), and Prera (3F, 1M). My friend owns the Pilot Knight. All the nibs are interchangeable. However, I do feel a slight difference in quality. The Prera has the smoothest nib and the 78G has the next smoothest. My 78Gs were even drier writers than the Preras! This conclusion is based on the pens I own, and it'll be interesting to hear if anyone else perceives a difference in quality.

The nibs and feed are all friction fit, so you just need to pull at them and out they come. :) You might need to twist the nib and feed a little to work their way out for the 78Gs.

I have the 78G stub and the 78G Fine. Nice writers. Better yet is my Pilot Elite 18 soft fine pocket pen. Smooth and springy. A pleasure to write with.

I have the Varsity, 3-78Gs (stub, medium, fine) and the Falcon. They are ALL smooth with the Falcon being the easiest to write with and the $3 Varsity is the smoothest.

So my questions is as follows: Are other Pilot/Namiki nibs similar?

From my limited experience I've found the current modern Pilot nibs to be ultra smooth. The pens can be held at nearly any angle including reversing the nib without showing sign of toothiness or scratchiness. The pilot pens in my collections have included Pilot Grance (E-F) , Custom FK-700-RB (E-F), Cavalier (F), and a Cross Townsend (XF)(comes with Pilot nibs) all have worked explicably and without fault. Maybe I've been lucky so far, but a number of other fountain pen users vouch for their quality control.

Any tried the new m90? Is that steel nib similar to the Prera/78g nib as far as smoothness and line width?

I have to say that 78g nib really surprised and delighted me. J

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
