Herbin : Jacques or Jean ?

Recommended Posts

Sorry , , can't find the answer on J.Herbin's website, nor on Google ...

Recently, the charming lady in Styl'Honoré in Paris corrected my "Jacques" to "Jean" , but I can't find any confirmation

of this ...

I would prefer "Jacques" : its sounds better to me in French .

Merci pour vos lumières ...

While we are talking about Herbin, can someone give me the correct pronunciation? Is the "H" silent or spoken? Is the last syllable pronounced "bin" or "bean"?

My thick-tongued anglophone pronunciation is "HEIR ban", but I always accept correction.

That's about right! :)

As a French person living in the U.S, I had to switch accent to get it right and ban is indeed the anglophone equivalent of the francophone bin.

Ah languages!

Is it fair for an intelligent and family oriented mammal to be separated from his/her family and spend his/her life starved in a concrete jail?

A french search on google with with Herbin and Encre along with either of those names shows precious little information.... I found a good number of links under the search "Jean Herbin" and Encre mainly the more definitive ones during my very brief look were a reference to a dip pen set that said Jean Herbin and a french calligraphy forum that mentions it as Jean Herbin. On the other hand, a french search for terms "Jacques Herbin" and "Encre" comes up with all of 4 results, none of them having anything at all to do with inks, pens calligraphy or wax.

Not definitive info, but i thought it may help.

Our member Jean Elie (alias: epictete92) might know it or find it out. He has been to the J. Herbin factory and has some connections there.

I thought it was pronounced as 'AIR ban' but you need to put a bit of accent into the 'Air' part!

N.

Of course, the 'n' in 'ban' is hardly pronounced at all.

Is it simply J. by itself like the S. in Harry S. Truman?

I think it's possible it could be J. by itself, if it is a company name.

Suppose that when the first Herbin started the ink business, only

J. was put on the sign?

Hello friends,

Thank you saintsimon and Soki, but you should not bet on me :-)

i have called this morning the headoffice of Herbin in Paris and even beside them no one knows the real answer, even people who has been working over there for years and years.

Sorry !

Best regards

Jean ( not the one from Herbin :-))) Elie

So it's like Air-baw (except not really a W, I just didn't know how else to write it.)?

Hm. Isn't there a little vestigial n-like something that brings up the end of the end? Sort of

"Airban"

As indicated earlier, I am profoundly monoglot, and this is based only on occasional hearing of the fairly insular Fransaskois version of French.

Jacques or Jean: whichever it is, I'll bet he's dead...

If not, I want his secret for longevity. :roflmho:

Looks like the founder of the company was actually a M. Herbin so J may be something else.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
