Bought a C-Series (and it´s great)

Yes, I bought the vilified C-Series FP Champagne with a fine nib, and it writes beautifully. Excellent performer, very smooth writer. Solid construction, spring loaded clip. Weighs about 3 cartridged Lamy Safaris. Moleskine friendly. I´ll post a review with more pics within a week.

So, for those in the minority who like the looks of the pen, take the dive, it´s a performer.

Another hit for the underappreciated Cross.

I just got into the fountain pen scene with the Waterman Expert City Line (Urban Silver) and I'm loving it. I saw the Cross C-series and I like the masculine lines on the pen and its heft. It looks and feels solid.

Can I ask where you got the C-Series with the fine nib?

More pics please.  *especially a pic of a capped pen*

Do either of you happen to have a photograph of the direct overside and underside of the nib on the C Series?

I'm curious.

Added, edit:

I actually picked up one of the C-Series a few days ago. The nib seems to feel a bit loose however, and doesn't look like it's quite sitting right.

Did a quick review of the pen, with high resolution photos.

Mine does not have a loose nib, not at all. Did you mail order it?

I like the clip and the over all look however as I almost always post my cap; how does it post and is it comfortable to hold posted? The main problem I have with it is that the lines of the pen are not pleasing to the eye when posted. Kind of like some convertible cars, not all look good with the top up, but down they have very pleasing lines.

Thanks for this post, and for your great review. I posted a more extensive reply in your Review Forum post here. As one of those who originally panned this pen back in early March, it was good to get a second - and much better - look at the C Series.

I'm not the hugest fan of the clip but, other than that, I'm sold. I like it quite a bit.

Thanks. Maybe they delete the review, maybe not, because of the image size (the image resize tool on Photobucket doesn't seem to work). So maybe I'll have to repost it.

The pen has it's charm. It's not as traditional styled - and distinguished - like a Townsend, but it's the kind of pen that goes well with nice casual clothing and a somewhat big watch, that's why I pictured it with a Rado Original Chonograph.

Also, I did the review when I was using Lamy ink. Now I'm using Noodler's Black and the the pen exhibits noticeable nib creep.

Me neither. I think it's the weakest part of the design. While I do like the fact that it's spring loaded, the big CROSS lettering, which is perforated to match the body, looks a tad glittery to me. I just doesn't go well with the masculine look of the pen.

If Cross changed the clip, with more subtle, non "glittery" lettering and offered a brushed stainless steel version, I would sell this one and buy that version.

The cap posts very well, with an honest-to-goodness positive stop on the back. I was impressed.

The clip is still kind of wussy, though. Don't test the spring too far, or you may wind up having to use that awesome Cross warranty.

I do agree with your analogy to Mike Tyson. The CROSS lettering can become quite annoying at times.

I purchased mine though our local dealer. Flakes my mind as to why it's loose, given I've used it just a few times since purchase. Though I didn't notice it initially in the store.

Update: Regarding Moleskine use with Noodler´s Black

Hello everyone. When I reviewed the pen I was using Lamy T-52 Black Ink and the C Series worked beautifully on Moleskine paper. The situation is very different with Noodler´s Black. When using Noodler´s Black on Moleskine paper, my C Series (fine) tends to skip intermitently when drawing lines that go from top to bottom (like with the letter ¨l¨). The problem only appears on Moleskine paper and not on cheap filler paper, where it continues to write smoothly. I flushed the pen to check again how the T-52 worked on Moleskine paper, and the skipping stopped. As always, ¨your mileage may vary¨, but just as a precaution, keep this in mind.

Hmmm...I love the look of the pen, but I made enquiries at my local retailer only to discover that here in Australia it will be selling at AUD$499. Kind of rich for me at the moment. I'd have to test one in-store and really fall in love with it before I part with that kind of money. I'd happily spring for another Townsend at that price, but the C Series is still an unknown quantity.

I write, therefore I...write a little more.

Ouch, how on earth do they justify that Chaz. when the price here in the UK without any shopping around is 120 GBP = 250 AUD

Beats me. For example, the RRP of a Townsend FP in Lustrous Chrome on the Cross web site is US$115. Here it's AUD$259; a bit of shopping around may save me $20-$30. Checking today's exchange rate the AUD$ is sitting at 72 US cents. So, that means I can walk into a retailer in America and pay ~AUD$160, thus saving myself $100.

All I can think of is they used the recent dive of the AUD$ as leverage to raise the local prices. As much as I love Cross, there's no way I can afford to pay the local premiun when purchasing. Hence, I'll only buy second-hand or overseas.

I write, therefore I...write a little more.

  • 2 months later...

I've been considering buying one in Monaco Blue, but the Champagne one I tried was a little heavy for my liking. Anyone know if there's a significant weight difference between the finishes, like there is between (say) the chrome and titanium Townsends or Apogees?

I'll probably end up going with a titanium herringbone Apogee instead.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
