Is a Waverly Nib the Answer?

Recently I posted a topic with photos of the high angle at which I hold a fountain pen: Who uses an oblique nib?

I asked whether an oblique nib would be best for me. I ordered a Lamy Safari with oblique nib--it didn't work well for me because of the high angle.

I've done some more poking around on the Fountain Pen Network and ran across discussions about Waverly nibs, particularly with respect to fine and extra fine nibs. I'm wondering if a Waverly nib is just the thing I need on my fountain pens. The upturned angle of the tip of the nib seems like that would be what I need. Some of my pens are very forgiving of my grip--my Visconti Van Goghs, Omas Bologna, Parker 51. But my newest addition--a Sailor Pro Gear--is not forgiving. Additionally, when my friend uses my pens, he gets what appears to be a truer line width with my medium nibs as he holds the pen at a much lower (and proper) angle.

So, should I order a pen from Richard Binder and request a Waverly nib, even if I want something as broad as a medium nib? Is this something anybody has had experience with, or should I send an email directly to Richard?

Thanks for the advice--

I have a Pilot waverly nib, the nib is tolerant to various angles of elevation and also to wrist rotation, however i bought the pen to experience the WA, I have a pretty regular grip.

Best,

Hari

I have an Edison Herald and recently posted a review where I tested mine for angle.

It wrote completely perpendicular to the paper (ie being held straight up-and-down).

You could email Brian Gray and talk to him about it too.

I don't think that a Waverly nib is necessarily the answer, nor, for that matter is it wrong. I think angle of writing has to do with how the tip, the iridium ball, is shaped and not how the nib itself is shaped. Talk to Richard Binder (or any other nibmeister) and tell them you hold the pen at a very high angle and they will shape it properly. If you want a Waverly on top of that I am sure it is possible, however the way I understand it the Waverly is especially effective for fine and finer points and might be a bit of a waste on a medium. Of course Richard Binder would know significantly more than me...

I have a waverly XF from Richard Binder on my Bexley 56, and it is the smoothest nib I have ever owned - and I have owned and own many pens.

The thing to do is e-mail Richard and tell him you use a high writing angle. He will tell you how he can fix up a nib for you - Waverly or whatever.

I agree with what others are saying. I do hold my pen at a high angle. Some nibs tolerate this and others do not. However, Richard Binder is able to take pretty much any nib and make it work for me. I don't think you HAVE to get a WA nib, but email Richard Binder. I am just a satisfied customer. jc

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
