a very old eagle pen with a glass cartridge

newest buy-it-now find on ebay: a very old eagle brass pen with a glass cartridge, similar (if only in age) to one i remembered from the very first chapter of the jonathan steinberg book on fountain pens. here's the seller's description:

"This is a very nice very early (turn of the century) all-metal Eagle fountain pen in solid brass with a black lacquer coat. It's historically important as one of the very first cartridge fountain pens ever placed on the market; the cartridge was glass, and refilled via an eyedropper. It features a clipless slip cap, pointed feed, and gold-plated nib that looks like a medium. There is some ear and brassing on the black lacquer, as is typical for these. Also unfortunately all too typical, while the majority of the cartridge is present, the top is broken off -- a vey common situation as they were very fragile -- one reason the pen wasn't a huge success. Still, a nice example of a truly historic fountain pen. Measures 4 5/8" capped, 5 3/8" posted."

would anyone know anything more about these old eagle pens, and would they know if (by some very slim chance) those glass cartridges can be replaced? thanks!

I have one in the twist pattern.

The cartridge is intact in mine.

I have filled it and it writes like a STRAW.

While it has a tiny ebonite? feed it really isn't a very good pen.

A nice piece of history.

I think it might be nearly impossible to find the cartridge.

Try dipping it and see how you like it.

I am also lead to believe by folks with a lot more experience collecting pens than I.

That these aren't as RARE as J. Steinberg suggests.

That is a VERY cool find and an attractive pen. I'd say it is well worth the money spent. Congratulations!

a good idea, thanks! but i'll have to see if i'd rather maintain the integrity of the pen (broken as it may be). i won't be writing with this, anyway, so it'll be just one for the collection--a rather unusual one ;)

Perhaps you could replace the cartridge with an ink-sac, and make it a squeeze-filler?

  • 2 years later...

I have one of this type too, and would also like to get it going again. I just posted a question on the Inky forum about where its glass Cartridges might be obtained. Someone suggested trying early Waterman glass cartridges. Are these easy or hard to get hold of. (Typical newbie question?)post-82898-0-48141000-1329728321.jpg?)

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
