Blue Black Comparisons

Jared

Recommended Posts

I've been long in search for the perfect blue black ink, and have amassed quite a hoard of different brands, thanks to the KCat Ink Sample Exchange and Pear Tree Pen Ink Samples. I am still hoping to get samples of Noodler's Prime of the Commons and Noodler's Ellis Island. Please PM me if you can help.

This is part 2 in my comparison of blue blacks, applied with a small watercolor paintbrush on Clairefontaine ruled A4 paper. Labels are written in Noodler's Heart of Darkness ink. For more blue blacks, see part 1.

Part 2:

Montblanc Blue Black

Caran d' Ache Blue Night

Parker Quink Blue Black (vintage)

Diamine Indigo

Sheaffer Blue Black

Pelikan Blue Black

Sailor Blue Black

Noodler's Midnight Blue

Noodler's Legal Lapis

Rohrer & Klingner Verdigris

Lamy Blue Black

Diamine Registrar's

FPN Starry Night

As someone else who'd like to find the ideal blue-black, I greatly appreciate your comparisons.

I came here for the pictures and stayed for the conversation.

Great job, Jared! It's so helpful to see them all together.

I would strongly suggest including PR Black Magic Blue in the comparison.

Thank you so much for the comparisons.. I have always been looking at different blue-blacks and this is mighty helpful :) May I ask about the MB blue-black though it does not look quite right

I received the MB BB from a sample trade. It had sat in my desk drawer for over a year. I'm not fond of it, but I'm not quite sure what it was supposed to look like.

Thank you very much for posting this. It is helpful to see these.

My Montblanc blue-black is a bit more blue than what I see here. Mine is quite a few years old, though. I like this ink very much.

Hero blue-black is a nice one, too.

May you have pens you enjoy, with plenty of paper and ink. :)

Please use only my FPN name "Gran" in your posts. Thanks very much!

Thanks for the comparisons! I love looking at scans like this. And it helps to know I'm not the only ink obsessive out there!

Hey Jared!

Thank you for that. To see such a comprehensive side-by-side review is great. I'm a big fan of BB inks and Pel BB in particular. I also have Starry Night, Diamine BB and samples of a few others.

Now I want Prussian Blue and Waterman BB...

My Stipula Calamo blue-black arrived today; it's a color they only sell in the Asian markets, apparently. It reminds me a lot of the vintage blue-blacks, particularly Sheaffer's.

Thank you, I had FPN starry night and was just wondering how Pelikan and Sailor compared against it.

Blue-Black is my favorite ink color. Tons of variations as is apparent in this review. I'll definitely have to check out R&K Verdigris. It's helpful to see it right next to my favorite BB, Legal Lapis. Thanks so much for posting this.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
