Mohi Moonrise... A good addition to Mohi's portfolio(Aside from the nib)
Aravind_A_2310 posted a topic in India & Subcontinent (Asia)
Mohi is widely known for making great value for money acrylic and ebonite pens. Their models like the Harmony, Aura, Tanishq, are widely known to be budget conscious pens that pack a punch. They're also known for having exceptionally tuned nibs out of the box. Their newest pen though... stands out in some aspects. Named the Moonrise, this is one of the trifecta released at this year's Pune pen show. And this marks Mohi's intention to go upmarket. The pen is priced at ₹2600/- (₹3000/- being the MRP), and after the Alex, this is the second most expensive pen that Mohi makes. The pen, is a fairly large pen, riding the line between large and jumbo, the barrel is made of acrylic and the section and cap is made of ebonite. I like this faded purple shade, seems to be a new design from Loyal. I also like the new roller clip. The barrel as I said, is acrylic and has a relatively thick wall to the ink chamber, The pen holds approx 2ml of ink, being a dedicated eyedropper pen. The cap takes 3 and a bit turns to uncap, and the section is a quite comfortable one. The pen has #6/#35 nib, I bought a medium, and this seems to be the newer batch, with engraving. Personally, I like the older design with the Mohi stamping. The nib is on top of an ebonite feed. Typical of most eyedropper pens... Sizewise, the pen is a large one, here it is in comparison with a Mohi Harmony and an Airmail 71JT: Filling the pen up, I was surprised at the barrel thickness, as evident from the step down milled in the section. I can't really show this off on camera, but the bore in the barrel has a light faceted effect to it as well... Bu you really have to look for it when holding the pen in person Coming to the nib, this was uncharacteristic of Mohi, in that, the nib was not good. It suffered from some serious canyoning, and the tipping had burrs on the inside, leading to a very scratchy writing experience in one direction.. The nib even though being a medium, was extremely sensitive to tine alignment. I had to do some relatively extensive tuning and grinding to get it to write as well as my other Mohis, but once I got it going, this was a very comfortable pen to use. Here is a writing sample Overall, it is a bit expensive for a Mohi. I get that they're trying to go more premium... and that is a good thing, but I'd say they need to improve their quality control on their new batch of nibs. I can't say it's a value for money purchase, but if you get a good nib, you will not be disappointed with the pen. But for the majority, If you're looking for a half acrylic, half ebonite demonstrator eyedropper, I'd say wait for PLP to release their Visio, it will mostly be a bit cheaper, and, probably more reliable. Plus Satish sir's customer service is extremely good. Thanks and Regards Aravind- 5 replies

In Aurangabad, Maharashtra, India, there is a pen shop called "Abhay Pen Agencies". In addition to selling other brands, this shop also manufactures and sells their own brand pens. their brand name is Mohi. The Mohi pens are made in a variety of materials like Ebonite and Acrylic. These pens have been documented by amk and wdp4baaz on FPN. You may want to read those reviews also, I have provided the ready links: https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/topic/281732-mohi-harmony-fountain-pen/ https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/topic/288813-mohi-ebonite-eyedropper/ https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/topic/288482-visit-to-two-old-cities-and-some-new-indian-fountain-pens/ https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/topic/287448-mohi-tanishq-new-indian-acrylic-beauty/ https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/topic/282503-mohi-ebony-fountain-pen/ In simple terms, the word Mohi simply means attractive. I was attracted to the Mohi pens and was looking to purchase an example. Here is where Pune based FPNer WDP4BAAZ entered the picture and gave me a wonderful gift of this Mohi "Ebony" eyedropper that he had managed to purchase through a contact in Aurangabad. The pen: http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af39/hari3171/Mohi%20Ebony/IMG_0819.jpg Opened: http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af39/hari3171/Mohi%20Ebony/IMG_0820.jpg It is a simple Dropper filled pen: http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af39/hari3171/Mohi%20Ebony/IMG_0821.jpg Usually the Indian Ebonite pens are turned on a manual lathe by an artisan. In the case of Mohi, the job of turning is done by a CNC, however CNC machning is just one part, fitting, assembly and polishing are all manual steps and have to be still done by hand. CNC gives the advantage of parts interchangeability, a feature missing in fully handmade. You can see from the following pic that the barrel is 2 piece and then nicely joined from inside: http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af39/hari3171/Mohi%20Ebony/IMG_0822.jpg The branding on the clip: http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af39/hari3171/Mohi%20Ebony/IMG_0823.jpg The ink view window remains slightly exposed even when the cap is closed fully, a nice touch: http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af39/hari3171/Mohi%20Ebony/IMG_0824.jpg Some pen users in India have a tendency to grip the pen right at the bottom of the section, near to the nib. Such users also demand that the distance to paper be as small as possible, thus we see deeply inserted nibs. The Mohi nibs are typically very deep seated, even on their jumbo pens and this small Ebony is no exception. The nibs are not generic, but are rather branded Mohi in a simple way. The nib is tipped and of Fine width. http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af39/hari3171/Mohi%20Ebony/IMG_0826.jpg http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af39/hari3171/Mohi%20Ebony/IMG_0827.jpg The Ebony is a shade larger than the M200(This was a lovely gift from and a memento of meeting another FPN friend, Kaweko in Heidelberg) http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af39/hari3171/Mohi%20Ebony/IMG_0829.jpg http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af39/hari3171/Mohi%20Ebony/IMG_0831.jpg Well, how does the Mohi write? Very well indeed... The nib is very smooth for a nib this fine and the line is appropriately dry for a student who has to write a lot on poor quality thin paper notebooks. Here is a writing sample: http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af39/hari3171/Mohi%20Ebony/IMG_0836.jpg On the back ground is the lovely covering letter in Marathi, written by WDP4BAAZ and enclosed with the pen when he sent it to me. http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af39/hari3171/Mohi%20Ebony/IMG_0837.jpg I hope the readers found this review useful. Cheers! Hari

Mohi Brown Rippled Ebonite Pen With A Clear Acrylic Barrel End
Mitinder posted a topic in Fountain Pen Reviews
Mohi pens are hand made by Abhey Pen Agencies, Aurangabad, Maharashtra, India. They make ebonite and acrylic pens but use nibs from some other manufacturer whose name was not divulged to me. I bought an ebonite pen which was described as “Ebonite Large with Back Window” in brown ripple with chrome trim. It is a delightful looking pen which I am going to review. Design It is a hand-made ebonite fountain pen with the last part of barrel made of clear acrylic to act as ink window with chrome trim in brown and black rippled colour. It is a medium sized pen. It has a cylindrical shape with straight cut ends and a the tear drop clip. The cap has a 2mm chrome cap ring and clip has a crisp Mohi inscribed on it. It is an eye-dropper filler. The brown rippled ebonite is of good quality and the clear acrylic ink window at the rear end of the barrel is a very charming feature of this pen and perhaps the reason I bought it. The pen cap opens in 2 1/2 turns, which is a very welcome feature. The straight stepped section is of a very correct thickness and length making good for tireless writing. The stainless steel nib is small for the size of pen and spoils the looks of the pen. 3.5/5 Dimensions Weight: 20 gms Length: 133 mm (5.4”) Length of uncapped pen: 120 mm (4.75”) Posted length: 165 mm (6.5”) Diameter of section: 12 mm (0.5”) Barrel diameter: 14 mm (0.65”) It is a medium sized pen with nice dimensions, weight and balance when posted. The nib is disproportionately small effecting the overall beauty of an attractive pen. 3/5 Nib & Performance The nib is marked “Mohi” Tipped fine. It is a firm steel nib with a 5mm feed. The nib is reasonably wet but very scratchy. 2.5/5 Filling system The pen is an eye dropper filler and holds 5 ml of ink. The clear acrylic “back window” adds to the charm as soon as the pen is inked. Eye dropper fillers are not my choice of filling systems because they tend to have an inconsistent ink flow and do burp. This pen was burping real bad till I adjusted the feed. 3/5 Value for Money The pen is priced at INRs 500/- plus postage (US$ 8 approximately plus postage). The pen looks beautiful and the acrylic window adds a different kind of charm to the pen. The quality of ebonite and polishing is extremely good. 5/5 It is a proud part of my Indian Hand turned fountain pens collection.
