Montblanc 242G Dry Out

My fourth attempt in five years at finding a working Montblanc 242g has once again failed. I think I must be the most unlucky buyer of vintage pens on this forum. The pen has been well restored with a new cork seal in place. It draws ink well and holds it with no leaking or burping. The nib is a slightly stubbish medium with a good degree of flexibility and initially writes beautifully wet (as others have - all others had leaking and burping issues) but runs dry after a paragraph and stops altogether. The barrel hasn't a scratch on it, the imprint is crisp, no crazing on the snow peak. The plating is all present with no sign of wear. I'm loathe to send yet another one back. I've tried flushing, different wet inks etc, all to no avail. I think these nibs are friction fit, but I really don't want to start pulling out what might be a brittle ebonite feed from a celluloid body. I've tried expelling a few drops of ink in case the tight cork is creating a vacuum. Nothing seems to work. If I let the pen sit the ink flow comes back to normal then dries out again after a paragraph.I really like these pens and the wetness and spring of their nibs combined with the surprising weight of the celluloid. I'd really like to hold on to this example if I can, but there's little point if I can't get it to write as it should. Any suggestions before I return attempted buy number four?

I would return it and get one and done from penboard...they have excellent customer service in my experience

That would be my suggestion as well.

So you think it's not a problem that can be solved? It's so clean - almost an unused state - that I doubt I'll ever find one as good again.

Can you post pics of the nib and especially a side pic of the nib and feed gap.

I really wouldnt expect this to be a tough fix. If the pen is in great condition otherwise then its worth considering a fix.

I can try anf get a pic up soon. In the meantime, there is no gap at all between the nib and feed. I've been writing with it as much as possible and it seems to be improving so I suspect it might have been old dried up ink. If it continues to improve, great. If not I'll send it to someone for repair.

It's likely old dried-up ink. There really isn't much else to go wrong with the Noblesse. Keep flushing with water.

  • 1 year later...

@UncialAlmost two years old post, but I am curious if you managed to get the problem resolved. I have had several of this model, 242, 244 that I worked on, no issues at all with how they write. It sounds that maybe the feed is clogged. Have you knocked out the nib and feed and give them a good cleaning (brush the feed well with oven cleaner and run a very thin blade through the feed ink channel)?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
