Montblanc 146 Dating/authentication Help

Hi Everyone,

My dad picked up a well used Montblanc 146 at an estate sale yesterday. I've been working on cleaning it up, but noticed that the "Germany" engraving on the clip ring is a little off. By that I mean it's neither centered on the clip ring as I've seen with some MB's, nor is it directly to the left of the clip as I've seen with others. Is this how MB's were marked after W. Germany and before serial numbers? I've taken apart the pen to clean it, and it looks like every other MB piston filler I've had. I've also included a picture of the nib and ink window, which might also help date the pen. Any advice and insight that can be offered would be greatly appreciated.

Looks fine. Could be up to the 1980s. No signs it is fake and the clips were like this.

Beautiful. The monotone nibbed 146's are my favourites. Congratulations.

I have a similar model -except that the clip-ring is marked W GERMANY - and was informed by Montblanc staff, at a recent service, that it is "probably a 1970's or 1980's pen"

As such, the dating of these pens seems to be within a decade, rather than a specific year.

As has been pointed out, a picture of the feed might help narrow things down.

Enjoy.

Thank you for all your feedback. Here's a picture of the feed below. I filled the pen and it writes beautifully. I'm leaning towards it being authentic, but we'll see what you all think of the feed.

That is known as a split ebonite feed and helps date the pen to the later 1970s to mid 1980s or so. The pen is authentic.

And with an 18C nib likely earlier than later and probably for the French market originally.

It's an absolutely lovely pen. Definitely authentic with a beautiful split ebonite feed. Take good care of that treasure.

Thank you all for your input and encouragement. It really means a lot to me. I also learned a few new things about 146's. I can't get over how great the nib is (extra fine by my estimations), and since it shows a lot of signs of being well loved by the previous owner, I don't have to worry about scratching it up myself. My dad really did right by me.

It looks like a 14c nib to me. Lovely pen.

Yes, I'd say (from the photograph) that it looks like an EF, possible even an EEF.

I go for broad nibs, as a rule, and was always nervous of these 'needlepoint' nibs.

But, I recently got a vintage MB with an EF nib and, once I got over the shock (it was advertised as a medium nib) and started using it, I became rather fond of it. Now, it often makes its way into my daily carry.

Enjoy.

Could be. There is a glare or shadow right over the numeral and I'm old.

It's a 14c. And it's definitely the shadow over the numbers, not age.

I have one like it with a nib of about the same width. Fantastic pen, one of the best MB ever made.

Is it me or is there something "out of sorts" with the section, more specifically the distal edge where the nib carrier screws in. Actually, may not be out of sorts, but more "interesting". If the barrel is what it appears to be then the feed is too "late". Also, the ink window color would be new to me.

An interesting pen........

I noticed that the section on this 146 didn't look like others I had seen. I think it's possible that the feed sleeve broke off at some point and was never replaced. The pen shows a lot of wear, especially under a loupe, and it wouldn't surprise me if this had been the original owner's daily user for some time.
