Diamine Teracotta 150Th, Ancient Copper Or Burnt Sienna

Hey folks,

I got a sample from Tas via the UK Ink Exchange with the recently released Diamine 150th Anniversary Terracotta, and wanted to see just how different it was to Burnt Sienna and Ancient Copper - the other "Autumnal Orange/Browns" in the Diamine stable...

Took some pictures on the iphone as well as a scan as I thought it might be helpful for others to see them side by side in different Lamy nib sizes. Apologies if there is already a similar thread so mods please feel free to move if needed. :)

If I was to choose a word for each of the three by way of comparison it would be

Terracotta - Matt

Ancient Copper - Rich

Burnt Sienna - Bright.

In this close up you can see how each of the three inks shade really well. The Terracotta has a lovely faded, whilst AC has the biggest "page presence" edging towards a rich autumn leaves brown whilst Burnt Sienna is lovely and bright with a bit more orange and pink than the other two.

Rhodia dot pad as you'd expect. The scan doesn't really do the differences justice, but I guess it all helps with getting an inky perspective. :)

This is a wonderful comparison. Thank you very much. I have DAC and love it, but these others are wonderful inks too. This is greatly appreciated.

Thanks Tas, and thanks for the original sample! I am really enjoying it! The problem is I've now got these inks occupying three of my pens which has pushed out one of my pens I normally use for a magenta in my rotation...

Oh well... will need to buy another pen!! :) (which is good news seeing as I have a kaweco sport on the way!)

The Terracotta looks more orange than my Levenger Pomegranate or Red Cashmere - but those are more "dark reds". But more to the red end of the spectrum than Apache Sunset which is more to the yellow/orange end.

Thanks SOOO MUCH Sean.... This is what I talk about in my Doppleganger thread... unless you put them side by side, you can't tell the difference. ;)

Another one to add to this list that is a close match to Terracota is Montblanc Leonardo.

I'm a fan of Diamine Ancient Copper, because it matches my Waterman Carene FP particularly well. However, I have heard of some clogging on nib problems with it in the past.

Nice comparison. I have the Terracotta and the Ancient Copper, along with the Leonardo Chalk Red. To me, the Leonardo is a fair bit lighter than the other two. Also, AC seems more wet in the pens I've tried it in, vs. Terracotta. The Leonardo is the driest to me.

Also, to me, the AC has the richest color, almost verging on a rust red. I just need to find a slightly drier pen for it.

I really like you succinct summation of the ink qualities, a skill I have yet to master. Thank you for your review and the time it took.

I enjoy MB 146 pens, Sailor, Pilot and Platinum pens as well. I have a strong attraction to dark red and muted green ink, colors I dislike for everything but FP ink. I also enjoy practicing my handwriting and attempting to improve it. I love the feel of quality paper under a gold nib.

Sean, you have done us all a marvellous service for which we are grateful.

Awww... bless you for saying that. Much appreciated.

Short but to the point.

Thank you, really enjoyed reading it.

No problem - appreciate the encouragement!

Thanks Cyber - LOVE that thread! will try to add some more content (I noticed the other day that Diamine Ultra Green and J Herbin Lierre Sauvage are nearly identical!)

Well done, thanks

Thanks for the nice comment. :)

Wonderful review, for which I am truly grateful.

As Donor Pen mentioned, I too have had trouble with the Ancient Copper, and because I love it so much I have been reduced to using it in a dip pen. Fortunately I like dip pens, but I would really be interested in knowing if the new Terracotta, or the Burnt Sienna, are free of the annoying froth that I have experienced with the Ancient Copper.

Terracotta has been in a pen since 12/08/14 without ANY issue for me & I know what you meant about Ancient Copper as I also bought it & have avoided using since my first fill. I have a bad habit of inking more pens than I can deplete in a timely fashion so I share some of the blame when I get nib "growth" BUT when so many others are fine you sure notice it when the new behavior "sets up!" I must say every aspect of the Terracotta has been a pleasure. (AND Safari!)

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
