Inspired by a post on instagram by fpgeeks (http://instagram.com/p/vbuDA_PvwT/?modal=true) about fitting a Nikko G nib on a TWSBI 540, I decided to try it out with my TWSBI 580.

 

Here are the steps:

 

1) procure Nikko G nibs

 

Easy enough, just ordered them on ebay and received them in about a week time.

 

2) fitting the nib on the TWSBI

 

Nikko G nibs are not designed for fountain pens. So, in its origina shape, it will not fit the TWSBI 580.

 

In order to be able to mount it, it is necessary to make the nib shorter and thinner.

 

The picture below (from left to right) shows the original nib, the nib shortened and finally thinned (by grinding).

 

Each square in the background has sides 5 mm long (for reference).

Shortening the nib is quickly done with a file.

 

What takes a lot of time and patience is the thinning.

 

However, if you persevere, results are very satisfactory as shown below:

Once you manage to fit the Nikko G nib on the TWSBI you have a superflex pen.

 

Railroading is not an issue (unless you want to write real fast) and it is quite enjoyable to use.

I wonder, that link is from abroad US, JetPens has them at this price for a pack of 10! You add shipping it is more or less same, but faster to you.

The 580 takes a number 6 nib whereas the mini iirc takes a number 4 nib

Correction, the TWSBI 580 takes a #5 nib. The Mini takes a smaller nib, though it's mainly down to narrower nibs (technically it may still be a #5?) - but it's wedged EXTREMELY tightly into the grip section, and next to impossible to remove the nib and feed without bending or breaking fins...

Cool! I did something similar with a Watermans #2 semi flex nib. Due to the nib shape I had to file down the black plastic bit of my 580's section so it would fit snugly.

How long is the Nikko lasting up against corrosion? I tried something similar with a Gilott 303 once and it rusted up real quick, but obviously that's just a steel nib.

 

And by thinning are you talking about reducing the width - ie the left and right side in the picture at the top, or are you reducing the thickness/ depth of the nib itself i.e the dimension you can't see in the picture above.

Here are the photos of the nib after 11 days in the inked pen.

 

As you can the only the lower outer part of the nib (where I ground it) changed color.

However I did not find any rust and there was no discoloration on the inside where it is in touch with the ink and the feeder.

 

Each square in the picture has 5mm long sides so you can have the scale.

 

In order to fit it I had to both 1) reduce the length to about 28mm and 2) decrease the thickness of the metal near the bottom (part now black) so that it could slide inside the pen.

 

It is important to note that Nikko G nibs are made of chrome plated steel. So I guess the chrome plating is preventing fast rusting.
