Stod On Nib

So I have a modern 149 with the STOD marking, and I've come across a couple of posts referencing it. My google searches have led me to those same posts here on FPN as well. What does it mean? Is it only on MBs? Further, only 149s/Hemingway? Are there non STOD modern 149s.

Stod is just a hallmark. I wouldn't put too much meaning into it.

It is rumoured that pelikan hallmarked nibs are made in-house, while non-halmarked nibs are done by Bock... but I don't know how this works with MB, as I assume all nibs are done in-house.

I have seen the STOD mark on their Sterling silver pens as well as on their 18K nibs. On some 18C nibs esp from the 60s, 70s the mark is not visibly stamped on the nib but it is there, e.g. on the heel.

I would be very interested to see a 18C/18K MB 146/149 nib *without* the STOD mark anywhere on the nib.

Cool, thanks guys. I didn't figure it was terribly important, just curious about it. My 14k nib didn't have it, so it stood out to me.

Does the 'o' on the stod have a line through it? I think I have seen this on a pen I once owned.

Is it a line through it or a umlaut?

I thought when I opened this that it was going to be a typo for 'Stood on nib'. Glad there is nothing to worry about!

Kind regards

Dear tmcneil

That may be because 14k is not officially gold and 18k is, by law, especially relevant to Europe / France.

Stod marks are basically jewelers personalized identification marks to recognize their product at a later date.

Anything made of gold (technically) should have them eg jewelry or watches etc.

Enjoy your pens

Have a nice day

Dear Hari

They may not be called Stod marks, but jewelers marks do appear in a variety of jewelry.

eg in eBay guides: Makers of gold rings stamp their logos or names inside, along with the gold content: 9KT, 10KT, 12KT, 14KT, 18KT, 24KT (24KT being the purest of gold content, as in mixed with little to nothing else but pure gold). http://reviews.ebay.com/WHAT-WINNING-GOLD-BUYERS-NEED-TO-KNOW-AND-DO?ugid=10000000001371310

"the Maker also made his mark, often his initials o and a symbol". This is a description of a Stod mark although not named as such in this site.

http://www.thomas-skipton.co.uk/Hallmarks.htm

Gold content should be marked on the gold products. "You should know though, that rings sold in the USA should." (talking about the carat markings here.) ref:

Ok thanks! I think you are using the term "Stod mark" to denote a "hallmark"?

StoD marks are in fact a type of a Hallmark for jewelers.
