Duofold pearl & gray

Just had one of those weird Google experiences where you have no idea exactly how you got there... but there you are at a site you've never been to before, in this case PensPlanet.com in Malaysia, looking at a picture of a pen in a finish you've never seen... in this case a Parker Duofold identified as pearl & gray.

The lines appeared black against a gray background, instead of black against a pearly white background, as in the more familiar Duofold Pearl & Black. Has anyone out there seen the pearl & gray version before?

Apparently they have one of each to sell. Wasn't someone looking for one of these not too long ago?

I've definitely seen a Parker Duofold in that predominantly grey colour you describe, but I can't remember where. Most probably either here in Auckland (NZ) or in an airport somewhere, but maybe in England. Sorry I can't be more precise. It was a few years ago, though, I'm pretty sure.

Best

If it's only available in International size, is that a clue it was not intended for the US market? Or is that a total red herring?

Hi Petra,

I was on the lookout for a Centennial size Duofold in Pearl Grey. Just recently acquired a mint specimen from the PT GB at a ton less money than PensPlanet is advertising it for.

Here's the actual one that I bought. I am still looking for a deal on the Centennial Black & Pearl from either production run 1900-1995 or 1996 to 2000. They are very good looking pens!

Wow - great looking pen! I like it every bit as much as the pearl & black... and maybe even more. Oh no another pen to lust after...

Do you know if Parker still does nib exchanges on the 96-2000 duofolds?

The Pearl and Gray Duofold was offered in both Centennial and International versions. It’s a very attractive pen, although I’ve always thought it might look better with platinum trim.

Don't know about nib exchanges on these Duofolds, Petra, but to find out will only take a few minutes of your time. Call them at 800.BEST PEN. If not done for the $10.00 fee for s & h like new stuff, maybe they'll do an exchange for a moderate amount of cash.

I'm a gold fan and in only a few cases have I found a particular pen in silver colored trim that appeals to me as much or more than GT. I have pens with silver trim, but wish they were GT in most cases.

I just wish there was more high quality GF or Rolled Gold trim offered rather than the micron or two of GP that is offered on modern pens. :(

Beautiful pen Roger! I actually prefer the pearl grey to the more common pearl and black. Mostly because I'm not that big a fan of white or whitish pens - and to me the pearl and black has too much pearl and not enough black. Purely personal taste of course! :)

Anyway, that is a sharp pen and at one point was in my top 5 wish list, but I never found one at a time that I had money to pull the trigger.

Don't you hate it when that happens?

Yes I do indeed! Particularly since it is a more frequent occurence than the reverse! :bonk:

You can still find both the grey and white pearl Duofolds at a couple of online U.S. stores, but of course, for rather hefty prices (probably why they still have them  ). But in my book, the white pearl looks a lot more stunning.

PS: I took a quick peak at pensplanet.com and I found their overall prices much higher than typical U.S. prices.

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

There is still chemistry for processing regular chrome (positive) films like Kodak Ektachrome and Fuji Velvia, but Kodachrome was a completely different and multistep beast.
    • Ceilidh
Ah, but how to get it processed - that is the question. I believe that the last machine able to run K-14 (Kodachrome processing) ceased to operate some 15 or so years ago. Perhaps the film will be worth something as a curiosity in my estate sale when I die. 😺

Take a lot of photos!   If the film has deteriorated or 'gone off' in any way, you can use that as a 'feature' to take 'arty' pictures - whether of landmarks, or people, or whatever.
