Substitute for MB Racing Green

Readymade

Recommended Posts

Walked into a MB shop today and found out that a bottle of ink now costs SGD$20 :/

Are there any inks that closely match MB Racing Green? Something from Noodler's perhaps?

PR Ebony Green is a very different colour in my opinion. Herbin Vert Empire and Noodler's Sequoia come closer, but still not the same. Here you can see them all together and decide for yourself:

this is a great resource

Private reserve Ebony Green looks good to me for BRG.

Or I can let you have a supply of BRG if you want to trade

Hi Arthur,

I think PR Ebony Green is too green compared to BRG. PR Avacado or Noodler's Sequoia may be a closer match.

Soki

Stipula Verde Muschiato is a very dark green ink, but it is expensive too.

You could mix ink yourself. You could use Waterman or Pelikan brown and green or black and green.

I would have said Noodlers Sequioa was the nearest I'd seen to MB Racing Green. I have both and I had thought them to be quite close.

Another vote for Noodler's Sequoia as the closest match. In almost all of my pens, MB Racing Green and Sequoia are indistinguishable.

It depends a little bit on the nib, but I think that Noodlers Zhivago also comes close to BRG. Well, it is darker...

I was going to say "watered down Zhivago".

What about adding some green to El Lawrence? (Some black to it?)

My Sequoia looks VERY different (darker, less green), but it's at least 3 years old.

Noodler's Zhivago, with a little green added makes a close match. I mix 4 parts Zhivago with one part Hunter Green and get a close, almost completely waterproof, match of BRG color. (The nib size and ink flow does make a difference, so it is best to experiment a bit to get exactly the shade you want.)

I have written with both MB Racing Green and Diamine Graphite and they are very similar. The Graphite is a little bit darker but it drys to an almost similar shade as MB Racing Green.

I've ordered a sample of Graphite. Normally gray is just - well, watered-down black - in my opinion but I keep hearing about this one have that green cast to it so am giving it a shot.

FWIW - I mixed a 1:5 Diamine Emerald with Diamine Graphite and cannot tell the difference between that and the *written* samples I have received of MBRG.

When I get more of each in (no clue when) I will be happy to send out a couple of vials to folks who have MBRG who can compare them properly and report back. I'll also try variations on either side 1:7 and 1:3 perhaps. Just to see what happens. Of course, does the mix behave like MBRG? Totally different question and again, one that will have to be answered by folks who actually have, use, and fully appreciate MBRG.

Not exactly the best of choices being a limited edition ink also but I've found Sailor Tokiwa Green (at least that's what I think it is) to be an acceptable alternative in my MontBlanc. It is a really dark, winter green (think dark pine leaves) with a hint of a gold sheen and is a very well behaving ink.

Dark enough for normal business and work corresondence.

I guess we all live different lives, write with different pens and inks, on different paper. I have Herbin Vert Empire and to me the color looks nothing at all like British Racing Green. The Herbin ink lacks darkness, so to speak. It isn't as pale as Vert Olive, but in my universe it's a middling green, slightly somber but only slightly. Well this side of the autumnal qualities of BRG or Zhivago.

So I am sitting on the edge of my chair waiting for a clear consensus to emerge on this subject. Then again, by the time I finish my current stock of BRG I may be bored with it, and be happy to revert to a black black and a bright sort of green.

As the days get shorter and shorter I feel that the autumnal can be overrated, and am surprisingly eager for the winter solstice to come. If I lived nearer the North Pole I might think Midsummer Eve is the ideal time for an autumnal ink. As things are my afternoons already lack brilliance, and it seems to be overdoing it a bit when I write with an ink subtle enough to be confusing. An ink I do love, however.
