Canvas-covered three-ring binder

Recommended Posts

When I was a kid <cue wavy lines>, your run-of-the-mill three-ring binder was covered in blue canvas. I haven't seen them for sale in years, but I need to stock up and I think I'd prefer that material to vinyl. Does anyone know where I might find something like that these days? (The Googles, they do nothing for me on this topic.)

If you found them, wouldn't you be sorta obligated to doodle all over them with a blue ballpoint?

Ack! Garage sales really aren't my style. But I have a friend who would welcome the "job". Thanks for the idea, Bill.

I've occasionally found one at a church thrift store. They were nice.

May you have pens you enjoy, with plenty of paper and ink. :)

Please use only my FPN name "Gran" in your posts. Thanks very much!

Your sample looks very nice, but part of the appeal of the binders I have in mind lies in their, ah, economy. :) I recently found some heavy-duty plastic-covered binders at Staples, and am making do with those.

Hi, Michael,

I remembered your post about blue canvas

covered three ring notebooks today.

I was in the Ben Franklin Store in Carrollton,

Ohio, and looked up at the top shelf and behold!

Five, blue canvas covered three ring binders,

brand new! These were made by Mead, and they

were the real deal. Amazing.

You still see them around in places like Bookbinder Design and other trendy types of stationery shops.

They are usually very pricey and this site is no exception. the covering is usually referred to as bookcloth.

Thanks for letting me know of these sightings. I think the Ben Franklin is more my style. :roflmho:

I recognize that my childhood was quite a while ago now, but I'm still amazed at some of the things that have vanished. These binders may just be the best example, along with the paper that we put in 'em.

Hi, Michael,

They were $4.99 at Ben Franklin.

Let me know if you ever want one.

(I'd be happy to pick one up for you and

mail it out to you.)

That's tempting, not to mention extremely generous of you, but I'll be spending most of the summer in Dayton. The Great Binder Quest* will give me something to do on the weekends. Thanks for the tip on where to start looking.

*Not to be confused with a pilgrimage to Nashua.

Zing that takes me back. I used my very first fountain pen (a sheaffer school pen in clear blue) to doodle all over my blue canvas cloth covered 3 ring binder. Don't know if they make these any more. My last one was in 1972.

OK, how about the Army Navy Surplus stores.

I have some old US Government green canvas ones, in 1 1/2, 2 1/2 and 3 inch...and they were made to go to war and survive.

A couple of mine are 30-50 years old made by Norwood, the other smaller ones, have no name, but cost $1.80 back when you got the plastic ones for 35-50 cents.

If some one can find some in the Army Navy Surplus stores, I'll look for Army Navy Surplus stores when I get to the States in January.
