Levenger True Writer Starry Night

AndyH

Recommended Posts

Okay, so I'm just a sucker for blue pens.

But Levenger has the Starry Night color True Writer on sale for $44.95, and they've ALSO got a 20% discount on till the end of the month. That's $36 for, from what I've read here already, is a decent but somewhat overpriced performer. At that price can I afford not to buy one?

Opinions, rants? I know there are some Levenger-haters but I think it sounds like a deal for a fairly attractive pen in my favorite color.

Love the looks of the line but the only Levenger I ever ordered I had to return due to lack of quality. In the future I'll just skip the middle man and buy an Esterbrook. Cheaper and writes better.

I've actually been thinking of the same thing and am also curious as to what others thing of their pens. :) But I had not heard of an extra 20% off, that's pretty awesome :)

Thank you for posting the coupon :) I had found another on a coupon site, but no details about it other than the code and 20% it was SPCHG1.

I have several Levenger fountain pens and are really happy with them. I have a flourish in green and a golden toroise both with medium nibs. They write very smoothly out of the box. I bought them on the Levenger outlet store on the bay and the price was right. Plus they are some of the most complimented pens that I use, folks like how they look. The Levenger pens with gold furniture are nicer than the ones with silver trim. I do agree with most FPN folks that the Levenger stuff off their web site is greatly overpriced even with 20% discounts.

I'd be curious to know whether any of you who've had bad experiences with TrueWriters have contacted their customer service department with your issues? In my experience, they've always done anything/everything they could to stand behind their products.

Just my two bits.

I have 2 True Writers and 4 Safari/Al-Stars. The Safaris DO write better period.

But, the True Writers are very solid writers that come in some amazing color designs. When on-sale or in their outlet store, they can be very reasonably priced.

Enjoy!

Do or do not, there is no try. . .

I have a couple of True Writers. They were bought, at different times, with sale prices and discounts, so i didn't pay full price for either. I have been satisfied with both in terms of quality, but they both write on the very wide side of their stated nib size (1 is supposed to be F & writes like a M; 1 is supposed to be M and writes like a Broad). I do find that I don't ever use the pens because I simply like my other pens better.

I don't own a TruWriter, but a colleague who caught Fountain Pen Itis from me thought they'd be a great way to start . . . . . and he was absolutely right, on the first one.

The enxt TW he bought was less than successful, as was it's (free) replacement . . .. the next replacement, however, was a wonderful pen.

Issue he had included leaking around the section/feed juction (hard to test for in the store), difficult starting after not writing (capped or not) for a hour or so, and one nib that was more weapons grade than not . . . . .

Really nice concept -- execution sometimes outstanding . . . .. . . . shame, innit?

I guess I'd take a risk if I was prepared to go around the block a couple of times with them.

True! As am I!

A few months back I bought a True Writer Blue Demonstrator that came with a bottle of ink for about $30, which is a really good deal for Levenger. I was not enthralled with the quality, but I do feel as if I got what I paid for. The fine nib wrote more like a medium and the converter had to be screwed down every once and a while to get the thing flowing again after periods of inactivity.

But then I saw this Starry Night and I was immediately lured in by the Blue. Even if it doesn't live up to being any better than my Demonstrator, I will like to display it for the design and color. I was sold once I saw the price dropped. I already bought mine and it is on its way!

Have a look at the Levenger's Outlet on fleabay before you commit. Might pick one up for less...

The Lev Outlet on eBay does not accept returns if that option matters to you. The current sale price listed in the original post less the discount is about as low as it gets for a True Writer unless the color is a closeout. In that case you might find an FP a well under $30 through the eBay outlet. Monogrammed ones can be had for well under $20 if that works for you. Still with certainty the outlet prices are not consistent so what you see today may not be the price in future.

I will ditto about nibs being much wider than they should be. I like a fine nib and the ones I have are labeled fine, but write medium to broad. They don't start up without dipping in water or ink and dry out with only a moment's musing. I haven't had problems with leaking and other than the nib issues, they are beautiful and well made. I keep thinking I will get the nibs ground to italic and then use them. I do love the starry night and am tempted, but can't see getting another pen that needs nib tuning.

Agreed, I have one of their stub nibs on a true writer and it's the worst nib I have ever written with not to mention I overpaid for it. I have several Safari's and every one of them is a great writer. Sorry but I'm not a big fan of Levenger.

This is the one i had...the black stub. One of their most expensive pens and it was horrible.

Perhaps, but my son's $10 Pelikano Jr too writes better than many of my far more expensive pens. However, many of us obviously look for more than just good writing performance, and for just $16 over the Safari, this Levenger buys you a lot of "pretty." If it writes OK, or can be made to write decently, it seems like it could be a good buy for someone who likes the looks of the pen.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
