Parker 85, Worth Collecting?

LAMYer

Recommended Posts

I'm ordering me a Parker 85. I've always been a Parker fan not so much because of the quality but because of the design. I ran across this model called "85" the other day and seems it's indeed a rare model so I ordered one without hesitation. I'm new to FP collection and really like to know just how collectible an 85 is.

I've read some threads here at the FPN too and got the basic descriptions but what I really want to know is the opinion from a "collector's point of view" - just how collectible the pen is, i.e. is it worth collecting comparing to the 75s or similar level Parkers or other brands?

Cheers!

As far as I know, 85 is definitely not all that common pen. They are sort of forgotten part of the Parker range and I find them very attractive.

So, if you like them, they're definitely worth collecting.

As far as I know, 85's are quite collectible, as they were not produced a lot.

But from a user's point of view, I will prefer a 75 any day. The only 85 I have feels quite light for comfort unposted, and posted it becomes too top heavy.

But this is only my personal opinion.

Many have been said. If you are collecting by all mean go ahead with your purchased. But if you plan to use it, MHO will be a P75 insteads.

The P85 are not as good built as the P75. and as for the holding, the P75 are better. The Nib (all work the same), except once the P85 section fail (leak) your purchased is as good as throwing away cos you hardly must a replacement.

The gold plate is a scare too. it wear too far and I felt that it is a lacking goldplating.

The P75 have been spoken for, so I will not touch on.

but being abit selfish, (Not really actually) I will be happy to trade a Proper P75 to you to swap for your P85 for collecting and data support reasons.

I think I've got the idea thanks to all of your replies. 85 is going in my collection and I'll get a 75 definitely as well. :bunny01:

Parker 85 is a great pen!!!

I had a GF 85 for a long while and its both a beautiful pen and very good writer.True the 75 is slightly a better writer but only slighly (due to its comfy section).

The 85 is a very collectable and uncommon pen.Very few of them made mostly in GF trim.

Here is a pictured reveiw I wrote a while back on it.

Hi all

Somebody looking for a rarer pen should take a look at the 65 as well. Its a beautifully designed pen and since it uses some of the 61 parts, it is easier to repair

  • 12 years later...

Just come across thsi historical post...

In my opinion, every true Parker pens collector has to have, at least, one Parker 85 in his/her collection.

While this pen had no commercial success, it has a nice look and very rare nowadays.

All the best is only beginning now...

Don't have an 85 but will definately suggest a 65 as a great addition to a vintage Parker collection. Got my first one at the Arkansas Pen show last year.

Thank you, Pakman.

I love 65s, too :) And I've got one in Gold Cumulus finish.

In my humble opinion, 65 is an amazing pen which was unfairly underrated...

The cloud collection finishes of Parker 61 and 65 are some of the more intriguing pen designs. I wish to have the whole set but are seldom for sale in good condition.😊

You are right... It is very difficult to find them in either NOS or mint condition.

I had to pay a fortune for my that 65 last year ... :(

However, just recently I've been quite lucky to buy 61 Mk III Gold Cirrus in unused condition though wit some storage marks...

What are "cloud collection finishes"?

Which colour did you buy last year?

I'm kind of sad that the 65 didn't take off better so to speak, at the same time I'm very glad, when I bought mine a couple of years ago the prices were very reasonable and not pushed up high by popularity, e.g. the 75 is quite pricey, usually above €100 (when I do look, I don't keep constant tabs).

I have noticed prices were up from last year onwards, many hobbyists from various areas complain about raised prices since the first lockdown...

I had a look thanks to this thread at the 85, lovely pen, not sure about the clip just yet (i.e. do I like it or not? Undecided still!)...

Olya,

Gold Cirrus is a kind of matte" gold surface both on cap and barrel .

Prices for all the most attractive Parker models (51, 61, 65, 75, some Duofolds have literally rocketed since middle last year... just went crazy...

Yes, the clip on 85 looks quite unusual for Parker ;) and I have got rather mixed feelings toward sit...

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
