Pen Shops in Louisville, KY

Does anyone know of a pen shop in Louisville,KY?

Hey, that's my hometown! I just saw a site for one in Middletown somewhere (wish I could remember the name, sorry), and I think there's a home-based Noodler's retailer, but without a B&M presence.

 

If you're not afraid to gamble, I'd check the monthly flea market at the fairgrounds, too.

That's the one I was thinking of, yes. I wish I could remember something more specific than a vague notion about reading something about one in Middletown...

 

Other places to look for pens in a B&M setting are luggage stores and maybe some jewelers (and independent stationers, of course). Just call and ask folks if they have any, but you can't necessarily expect to be allowed to test drive any pens or inks or to get a wide selection...

 

*edit to add: The Write Fill, from Google Maps and Street View information, is definitely run out of someone's home...

About 90 minutes north east in Cincinnati, Ohio is a store called "Appointments". They are in Tower Place Mall (direction link here).

After searching around Louisville for a pen shop, I came up empty.

 

As an alternative to Louisville, I strongly recommend "Leather, Inc" at Lexington Green in Lexington.

Taylor Trunk carries Waterman and Cross fountain pens, maybe some others. However, the only bottled ink they carry is Waterman Blue and Waterman Black.

I talked once with the Lamy rep for the Midwest, actually during the pen show at Leather, Inc. in Lexington, KY. The rep told me there was a seminary in Louisville that carried the entire line of Lamy fountain pens because the students were required to use fountain pens! She didn't say what seminary, so thanks for pointing out Edgar's!

I stopped by Edgar's today and picked up 2 Sailors--a clear Demonstrator with extra fine point and an orange Professional Gear with a stub point. It is really a nice little shop. They had a pretty fair selection of Sailors-they had 2 King of Pens; one with gold trim and one with rhodium trim. Both were substantially discounted,too bad I didn't have that much cash on me. They also had Lamys--mostly Safaris but a few other models. There were some Watermans---several Charlestons, a Carene or 2, and several Hemispheres. They had Waterman ink, Sailor ink, and Private Reserve. The selection was limited, but they are going to get in a much larger selection soon.The clerk was knowledgable and friendly. I wiil go back soon--hopefully one of those King of Pens is still there!

The seminary doesn't require students to use FPs, but a number of profs there do, and many students have started following suit. I don't know of any place in Louisville that carries Lamy and Sailor pens and inks, so it's a good place to check. I agree with a previous post on how their prices are very competitive.

I don't know of any other outlet locally for Lamys and Sailors. Or of any other bricks-and-mortar store that lets you try them out in the store before purchasing (I've seen calligraphy pens in local department and art stores, but those don't pass the so-what test for me).

 

They showed me the gold-trimmed King of Pen -- it's beautiful but a bit too big for my pygmy hands.

 

I didn't see them on display, but they said they also have the Lamy converter cartridges and nibs as well.

 

Looking forward to a wider selection (I'll be like a kid in a candy shop)!

Another vote for Edgar's in Southern Seminary. Finally was in the area when they were open and stopped in just to look (yeah right). Alex was very knowledgeable and helpful. Tried a few different pens and ended up with a fine point Lamy Safari.

 

I'll definitely be going back.

Does anyone know how Leather, Inc.'s prices compare? What I saw seemed to be full retail. But, there was quite a selection of FPs in the sale case. I'm new to FPs and I knew that I wouldn't be dropping more than $100, since I had already spent a bit too much on pens last month. So, I didn't trouble the employees. But, I was pretty curious about that pen case. Do they ever run specials? Any hints to shopping there?

All they have in bottles is the 4 basic Lamy colors Black, Blue, Red & Green. They are also discontinuing their Waterman pen stock, and will carry only Lamy and a few high-end Sailor pens. The associate told me that they may bring back a few PR inks, and possibly another brand, but they didn't yet know which one, or when that might happen.

I think the discounts in the sale case run anywhere from 25-50% off retail. I've bought several pens from that case and in some cases, got about 1/2 off retail.

I heard somewhere on this forum that Sailor was not shipping to the USA right now due to a change in distributors. I'm not sure how true this rings, or whether that has in fact been resolved.

Oh, Leather,Inc. in Lexington carries a full selection of Private Reserve inks, as well as Diamine,Caran D'Ache,Lamy,Pelikan,Parker,and others.
