Image Transcription

Pen: Lamy 2000 Fine Point (maybe extra fine)

Ink: FPN Galileo Brown

This ink usually is a lot wetter in my pens, but it is very dry in this one. The Nib is way too fine for me. I need it to be more wet.

Pen: Lamy CP1

Ink: Mix of 1 part Aquamarine to 4 parts Dragon’s Nalpalm

Nib: Lamy Italic 1.1 mm

I love to write with this pen. How can I get my 2000 to write like this?

And the second image:

Lamy 2000 with Pressure

It feels like I am writing with a Box Cutter when I do this.

Is the Lamy 2K brand new or used?

Does it work with another ink like Waterman blue or blueblack?

If it is a new pen, get a nib exchange.

If it is an older pen, try to disassemble and clean the pen and give it a try with some Waterman ink before you go back to your favourite ink. I had a Lamy 2K from ebay that was terribly clogged by black ink. Disassembled and soaked the pen for days without any result (was before I bought an ultrasonic cleaner) and finally send it to Lamy for service .... Came back like new and writes like a dream since then.

Had this clogging issue with other pens, too and got it solved with soaking, flushing and us cleaning. Worst had been pens with any kind of black or red ink residues.

You can disassemble the pen easily: the section unscrews. Be careful of the clutch ring! They have the habit to disappear  Flush and soak the section for a while. Carefully push the nib into the section. Maybe jiggle a bit. Nib and feed will come loose eventually and you can go on cleaning ....

First of all, stop using pressure when writing with the pen! FP's don't need any pressure to write.

If it feels like a box cutter, then you probably have a misaligned nib. Send it in to Lamy for a nib exchange.

I'm trying the soak. I bought the pen used. Can I still send it into Lamy for a medium nib exchange? Does anyone have a handle on how much that would be and what the turn around time would be?

1. Wash it 10 x with water.

2. Wash it 10 x with dishwater detergent in water.

3. Repeat point 1.

4. Rinse 3-4 x with the ink (not saving it).

5. Refill.

6. Enyoy!

Mike

PS: If that does not help in any way, get rid of the pen!

Took it apart down to the nib and washed out the nib of all ink. It writes a little more consistantly now, but not wet enough, and very thin! I may just want a new nib, but I'll try the soapy water flush attacks and ink purging.

By the way... the scan does my Aqua Marine Dragon's Napalm mix no justice. Very nice Rose/Wine color with a lot of shading.

Send it back they might be able to clean it out as well.

As long as the nib is in good shape, they should do the swap with no problems. If it has any scratches or anything, then you might have to buy a new nib. Call Lamy, tell them about your problem, and see what they say. In the worst case scenario, you can send it to them, and ask them to smooth it out for you.

If you're living in the US, the turnaround time for a pen is about two weeks. If I recall correctly, all Lamy pens have a lifetime warranty from LamyUSA. I may be wrong, though, so you should probably check up on that.

Be careful of which nib size you swap out for. If your 2000 has an XF nib and you swap it out for a M, you're going to experience quite a big jump.

I had asked for a nib swap for another ebay L2K.

As long as the nib is in perfect condition (not bent or otherwise damaged) they do swap.

Looks like your pen needs at least an ultrasonic cleaning if it is as clogged as mine had been .... Lamy will clean the pen and get it back in working order.

Isn't this supposed to be pretty rare? i was under the impression that lamy 2k pens are usually wet and run too wide.

Depends on the cause of the poor ink flow.

If it were a brand new nib, it would be pretty rare.

If the cause is a clogged pen it is pretty common.

I had this issue with various nibs/pens and it took me days to clean some of them. Finally they wrote like I had expected them to write in the first place .....

I like medium pens more than fine anyway. I'm going to look into sending it in and getting swapped rather than try to clean it and possibly mess it up by accident. Hopefully will get a call in to them today.

Thanks for the advice.

How does the pen write with other inks? I have found the L2K to be pretty picky with ink and paper. With Herbin on Apica, for example, I could barely get it to write. It was like the ink would not flow to the nib properly. On other papers the same ink would gush out too fast.

I avoid using HP 32# paper with the L2K as well, as the nib drags horribly rather than gliding across the page.

I've been using a special ink, Sailor Kiwaguro, in my L2K since spring, but Parker Quink worked very well. I'm sure Waterman would too.

I have never used FPN inks but maybe the combination of the ink's viscosity/chemical makeup (is Galileo bulletproof?), paper, and the somewhat unique nib of the L2K just don't work well together.

So I picked it up for the first time this week, and found ink at the piston handle at the base of the pen. Seems broken to me. Flushed it 10 times water 10 times soapy 10 times water and purged with ink 3 times... still writes cruddy. Off to the mfr for you, my little black nuisance.

Anyone had a favorable experience with Lamy's USA service?

Yup, most folks who've dealt with Lamy service have had great service from them. On par with Chartpak, which is a good thing. :)

  • 4 weeks later...

Got it back from Lamy yesterday.

It writes great now!! It's a very wet fine that writes a little less fine than my Lamy Safari fine, but thinner than my Mediums.

Only problem... BAD LEAK AT SECTION!!! There is a constant leak of ink at the section that dirties my hand. It's very apparent when you take the cap off for the first time in a day. It leaks right where the clutch catches in the cap contact, and then from there spreads to the stainless steel section, leaving 6 rectangular ink spots on the s.s. section. UGH!

Pics to follow later if I get around to it... but it's back off to Lamy. I'm going to call first to see if they can handle the shipping charges this time, since it did not come back fixed.

Only good news... Lamy had a fast turn around. Fixed it within 3 days of recieving it and sent it back that same day, arriving at my house by ground, about a week later.

  • 1 month later...

Sent it back to Bob with Lamy. He replaced the barrel free of charge. Of course it was a pain and took some work to get this pen to behave... but now it behaves great.

I recommend LamyUSA repair service. Use it if you have a Lamy

I recommend now the Lamy 2000. It's a very nice pen.

This case is now closed.
