Sailor Pen Question

I just purchased a Sailor 1911 pen. The nib is marked "H-F". Is this a Fine nib, or something different. I know they make variations. Thanks.

I believe it stands for "Hard Fine", i.e. firm & fine.

Japanese nibs typically write a width smaller than Western nibs though, so the Sailor H-F gives a line closer to a Western EF.

Omedetto! Congrats on getting a Sailor! :)

Thanks for all your help. I think I'm gonna love this pen!

I talked with Sailor's American distributor, and based on our conversation, it seems that the fine/medium nib may be more to my liking. So, I've mailed the pen off to them and they've promised a quick turnaround. It sounds like a F/M would be more equivalent of what might be an American Fine. Having never tried a Fine/Medium, I'm assuming I will like it. The Fine nib was a bit too narrow for my tastes.

Yes, Sailor nibs (in my limited experience) tend to run a size smaller when compared to western nibs. I have the full sized 1911 which is marked as a hard medium but is as fine as any of my european (F) nibs. And I have a 1911M which is a hard broad nib and is pretty much the same as my western (M) nibs.

I only have one Sailor pen, a Sappro. Will not buy another one. In no way does the nib or the ink flow live up to the hype. A huge disappointment.

There are always duds - of the 9 Sailors I have, the most expensive one is the dud but all the others are superb writers. Flawless...

A Sailor 1911 was one of my first fountain pens, and it really got me started. Over 100 fountain pens and years later, the 1911 is a pen I often come back to-- for its classic good looks, the way it feels, and its flawless performance. I especially love the F-M nib, this time purchased in a burgundy that was discontinued a few years back.

Congratulations on your fine choice!

I have 5 Sailors and they are all great pens.

Recently, I sent 3 to Michael Masuyama for nib adjustments. What were really nice pens became really great pens and there's always at least one of them ready to go in my pen case.

I might offer that once you find the nib you like and it is adjusted properly (and many are right out of the box), you really have a friend for life IMHO.

My problem is that I have too many and still lust after more!

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
